All you need to make Waffle Tofu is tofu (duh), cornstarch, and spray oil. Now this might seem pretty bland, and that’s why you need to top your tofu waffles with toppings or sauces. I did an experiment where I marinated the tofu before putting it in the waffle maker, but that burnt the flavor of the seasoning, so I recommend leaving the tofu plain and then adding the toppings and seasonings after it’s cooked.

Once your tofu is cooked it has a fun waffle shape that is great for holding sauce. It’s crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside, the perfect chewy texture.

For toppings, in the photo, I made a simple spicy sesame scallion sauce that is delicious! I’ve included the recipe below if you want to make it, but feel free to top your tofu waffle with whatever you like. Waffles are very neutral in flavor so you can go sweet or savory.

Some topping/sauce suggestions:

  • Spicy Sesame Scallion Sauce (recipe below)
  • chimichurri
  • Smashed avocado and everything bagel seasoning
  • Tomatoes, balsamic vinegar and basil
  • Vegetarian Cheese Sauce
  • Pizza inspired-tomato sauce, vegan cheese and vegan pepperoni
  • Berries and maple syrup
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Banana and Vegan Nutella

Coat tofu slices in cornstarch

How to make Waffle Tofu:

Cut the tofu into 4 slices. Add cornstarch to a large bowl. Take each tofu slice and coat it in cornstarch, then shake off the excess.

Spray the tofu with oil then place in your waffle maker. Place something heavy (such as a skillet) on top of the waffle maker to help compress the tofu.

Preheat your waffle maker. Before adding the tofu to the waffle iron, spray each slice generously with oil so there are no dry spots. Spray the iron lightly with more spray oil, then arrange the tofu slices in a single layer. Turn off the waffle iron, then place something heavy (such as a cast iron pan) on top to help the tofu compress as it cooks. Let the tofu cook, checking every 5 minutes until it is lightly golden. This will take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.

Cook until light golden brown.

Once the tofu is cooked it is ready to enjoy! Serve it like toast and spread avocado on top, garnish with different sauces or add your favorite toppings.

Top with any sauce of your choice. In this photo I show my Spicy Sesame Scallion Sauce.

If you are making a spicy sesame scallion sauce, add all the sauce ingredients to a medium bowl and mix. Spoon over waffle tofu.
