This delicious rice omelet is a fusion of Western and Japanese flavors. In Japan it is one of the Yoshokua category of western Japanese food.
It’s a staple of Japanese home cooking, but is also often found in Western-style restaurants in Japan.
The word Omurior omu-raisu (オムライス), derived from the Japanese pronunciation of English words omelette And rice. Omelet is spelled omuretsu (オムレツ) and rice raise (ライス). So omurice is a mixture of “omu” from omelette and “raisu” from rice.
Omurice consists of Japanese white rice stir-fried with ketchup, soy sauce, chicken, ham or bacon and vegetables such as corn, peas and carrots.
This tomato-based fried rice is then stuffed into a simple, thin omelet and shaped like a soccer ball. Finally, the omurice is turned onto a plate and drizzled with ketchup or ketchup sauce.
Omurice tastes sweet, sour and savory. And the combination of fried rice and soft omelette is both filling and comforting. A real treat!
To make Omurice vegan, we swapped meat in the fried rice for spicy mushrooms. King oyster, shiitake, and enoki are all great choices.
Then we combined mushrooms with corn and spring onions, but you can also use other vegetables for the fried rice by following our tips in the FAQ section.
For the omelette, we replaced the eggs with a dough made from silken tofu, starch, flour and curry powder.
Silken tofu is a great egg substitute in vegan recipes and is high in protein. Starch and flour help bind the ingredients together, while curry powder adds flavor and color to the vegan omelet.
Once you learn how to make our vegan omelette, you can use it in any other recipe that uses eggs! It’s so awesome.
