Have you ever tried Hawaiian rolls? You’ll be spoiled, friend! Today we show you how to transform the classic recipe into a much healthier one. Our Hawaii rolls are both vegan (non dairy, without egg) And sugar freewith additional fibers.
As the name suggests, these buns are famous in Hawaii. They are very similar to Portuguese sweet bread, and in fact it was the Portuguese who brought the recipe to Hawaii when they settled there around the 19th century. How’s that cute roll? Hawaiian bread is soft and soft like brioche.
The special thing about them is the use of pineapple juice as a sweetener. This gives the buns that sweet tropical touch that makes you think of happy holidays! But to get that soft and fluffy texture, the classic recipe uses lots of eggs and butter. Guess what? We’ll show you how to bake just as delicious rolls without use any butter, refined sugar, or eggs!
To do this, we replace sugar with additional pineapple juice. Because sugar melts during baking, it behaves similarly to a liquid ingredient. Also, pineapple juice is naturally sweet. So swapping out sugar for more pineapple doesn’t change the recipe structure, but makes it healthier.
Then we swap eggs for coconut yogurt and use oil instead of butter. Those last two changes made our Hawaiian rolls completely vegan, extra-tropical, and without all those nasty saturated fats and cholesterol.
Finally, instead of white flour, we use a combination of natural and wholemeal flour. In this way we increase the number of fibers in the formula. More fiber means better health because fiber counteracts the absorption of sugar into your bloodstream.
We are so proud of these buns. They’re delicious, healthy, and really fun to make. Compared to what you get from the traditional recipe, our vegan Hawaiian rolls have 4 times less saturated fats, 50% more fibersAnd three times less sugar. Just follow the steps below and enjoy!
frequently asked Questions
Can I use fresh pineapple juice instead of canned juice?
Canned pineapple juice is perfect for making this sweet bread recipe. During the canning process, the naturally occurring enzymes in the juice are inactivated. That way they don’t interfere with the fermentation process.
However, if you can’t find canned pineapple juice, you can still make these rolls with fresh pineapple juice. Simply heat the juice on the stovetop or in the microwave before using, then allow to cool.
What are classic Hawaiian rolls made of?
The classic Hawaiian sweet bread recipe is made with butter, milk, eggs, and sugar. Butter and eggs give these rolls a fine and fluffy crumb, while the sugar is paired with pineapple juice to add a touch of sweetness.
Instead, we made our Hawaiian Buns 100% plant-based. We swapped butter for oil and eggs for yogurt. The result is incredibly soft buns, perfect for those following a vegan diet.
What type of flour should I use for these sweet buns?
We recommend using plain all-purpose flour to make these buns light, soft, and fluffy.
Using bread flour instead results in a heavier, denser crumb. This type of flour is higher in protein than all-purpose flour as it is intended to be used for bread loaves where a strong gluten complex is needed.
How do you eat Hawaiian sweet bread?
Soft, squishy and with a hint of sweetness, these buns are perfect for both sweet and savory fillings. You can cut them in half and fill with:
You can also eat them on their own or serve them with soups, stews and curries.
