An ultra-thick and creamy smoothie, this classic Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie tastes like a milkshake but is packed with nutrients! Made with just 4 simple ingredients that you almost certainly have on hand! The perfect breakfast or snack smoothie.

I declare this the summer of smoothies! And no, not your average breakfast smoothie, but the summer pick-me-up smoothie in the afternoon! I’ve never been a non-breakfast smoothie eater, but now that we live in an area with full blown summer (with temperatures exceeding 80 degrees!), I’m ready for anything that chills me. This Classic Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie is no exception.

I’ll be honest, this recipe is for 1 person, but I almost never make it for 1 person. C and I enjoyed their sweetness almost every afternoon, so I generally double the recipe. I’m going to suggest you do the same because trust me – your spouse/kids/neighbor…everybody…will want some of this.

Ingredients in a banana peanut butter smoothies

Bananas (fresh or frozen) – Frozen bananas make a thicker smoothie and are also a great source of potassium.

peanut butter – Either chunky or creamy peanut butter works. Feel free to use any other type of nut butter or seed butter.

Almond milk– or other plant-based milk (like oat milk or coconut milk) or dairy milk

Ice – indispensable for the ice-cold smoothie taste

Optional – Chia seeds or ground flax for thickness and nutrition

You will also need a high power blender. I personally use a Vitamix and love it!

How to thicken your banana peanut butter smoothies

For a nice extra thick smoothie, there are a few things you can do:

Use Frozen Bananas: Peel and store your bananas in the freezer to give your banana peanut butter smoothie more of a milkshake consistency

Use ice: This is the baseline to use to thicken your smoothie, but especially if your fruit isn’t frozen!

Reduce your liquid: If you’re drinking this smoothie through a straw, stick to the recommended 1/2 cup of liquid. However, if you’d rather turn this into a smoothie bowl, reduce the liquid to 1/4 cup. The smoothie may take a little longer to get going in the blender, but it will thicken up nicely and you can eat it with a spoon!

Add ground flaxseeds or chia seeds: Both flax and chia are super absorbent and will help thicken a smoothie. They’re also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber.

Substitutions and Add-ins:

To give this peanut butter and banana smoothie a veggie boost, add a Handful of spinach or kale (about 1-2 cups) in your blender. I promise you won’t be able to taste it!

Allergic to peanuts? feel free Sub any other nut or seed butter

Want a chocolate peanut butter smoothie? Add to 1 tbsp cocoa powder to mix.

For a caffeine boost, try freezing Coffee leftovers or cold brew into an ice cube tray and use it instead of regular ice cubes

Get an extra dose of protein and flavor by adding a scoop protein powder or a 1/2 cup greek yogurt

Add extra fruit! love berries? Mango? The sky is the limit! Just add another cup of fresh or frozen fruit and a few extra tablespoons of liquid.

Make them popsicles! Pop into ice pop molds and freeze for a summer smoothie!
