Frequently Asked Questions about Strawberry Cheesecake Mousse

Fresh or frozen strawberries

The recipe can be enjoyed all year round, not just during strawberry season.

If you choose frozen strawberries, be sure to thaw the berries completely. Before you begin, be sure to blot away any ice crystals and excess moisture to avoid a runny or watery mousse.

Can you use other berries?

In any case, this strawberry treat also works with fresh or frozen raspberries, blackberries, blueberries or pitted cherries.

Replace the two large strawberries with three cherries, four raspberries or blackberries, or seven blueberries. For a smoother texture, you can strain raspberry or blackberry puree to remove the pips.

If you experiment with other fruits like oranges, bananas, mangoes, pineapples or fresh figs, be sure to share your results with us.

Vegan strawberry mousse

For dairy-free mousse, choose the coconut cream option or a plant-based cream cheese like Tofutti or Trader Joe’s Vegan.

The recipe is already vegetarian (without gelatine) and egg-free. It can be made without refined sugar if you blend coconut blossom sugar or date sugar until you get a powdered sugar texture.

Can the recipe be prepared in advance?

Yes, this is a great dessert to make ahead. I actually recommend making it ahead of time, as the classic strawberry mousse thickens as it stands.

When stored properly in an airtight container in the refrigerator, dessert will keep for up to four to five days.

Once in the jar, the berry mousse is portable and doesn’t leave a mess, making it a great option to take to baby showers, brunch or tea parties, book clubs, or any other event.

Ingredients for no-bake strawberry desserts

Ingredients for the strawberry mousse dessert

The recipe calls for cream cheese or coconut cream, powdered sugar or a similar sugar-free alternative, optional regular or Greek yogurt, and optional vanilla bean paste.

Unlike many other strawberry mousse recipes, this one is naturally egg- and dairy-free, with no gelatin, cool whip, condensed milk, heavy cream or whipping cream, mascarpone, agar-agar, or strawberry Jell-O.

The strawberry recipe can be vegan, gluten-free, paleo, keto, and no added sugar.

For a keto strawberry mousse with no added sugar, you can use powdered monk fruit or allulose blend, erythritol, or powdered xylitol. I have not tried stevia and believe using such a small amount would result in a more runny, thinner consistency.

How to make strawberry mousse

Read the recipe instructions and assemble your ingredients.

If using the cream cheese option, allow this ingredient to come to room temperature for easier mixing and a smoother end result.

If using the coconut cream variant, open the tin to ensure the contents are thick and creamy and not rock hard. Every once in a while you may come across a can of hard or fluffy cream. Unfortunately, such cans are not well suited for making mousse.

To prepare the recipe, first cut off the stems of the strawberries. Mash or puree the berries until completely mashed.

Add all remaining ingredients and stir until smooth. When making mousse with hand mixers, be careful not to create stiff peaks.

Using a food processor, hand mixer, or good blender will give you the fluffiest, airiest strawberry mousse because they whip air into the recipe. If you only have a fork, it can work as long as you don’t mind that the texture isn’t nearly as light and fluffy.

After blending the no-bake recipe, pour the strawberry cream into glasses, bowls, or mugs. The mousse dessert will thicken significantly as it cools.

See below for more serving suggestions.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Although you can technically freeze the dessert, it won’t have the best creamy texture.

Mini Strawberry Mousse Cups

serving suggestions

This chic homemade strawberry dessert can be served in many ways.

Fill parfait glasses with coconut whipped cream, diced strawberries and sponge cake to create beautiful pink strawberry shortcrust pastry parfaits.

Or use a star-shaped piping tip to pipe the recipe into cups or glasses and make individual mini strawberry mousse cups, topped with sliced strawberries and graham crackers, mini chocolate chips, or shredded Oreo cookie crumbs.

Place a thick and creamy strawberry mousse filling in the center of Oreo cupcakes or traditional healthy blueberry muffins. Or eat it right out of the bowl with a spoon.

The whipped mousse also makes a wonderful frosting for brownies or as a decoration on cakes, tarts, tarts or cheesecake in place of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Try topping it with homemade Nutella

Strawberry mousse without gelatin or whipped cream
  • 8th oz cream cheese or coconut cream
  • 4 oz yogurt or additional cream cheese or coconut cream
  • 1 Cup powdered sugar or sugar-free alternative
  • 5 medium strawberries
  • optional 1/4 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • If using cream cheese, let it come to room temperature. If using coconut cream, open the can to ensure the contents are thick and creamy. (On the rare occasions a can of coconut cream will be hard and flaky. Unfortunately, mousse doesn’t work in these cans.) Remove the stems from the berries and mash or puree until pureed. Add all remaining ingredients and mix with a food processor, blender or hand mixer until completely smooth. Divide among serving bowls and store in the refrigerator. The mousse will thicken significantly as it cools.View nutritional information
