Spring break adventure part 3

I’m back to share Part 3 of our spring break adventures! If you missed the Spring Break Adventures Part 1 + 2 post, watch that first.

We arrived at Matt’s childhood home in Sewickley, just outside of Pittsburgh, PA very late on Tuesday night and we spent the rest of the week there hanging out with his family and our local friends.

In addition to Matt’s parents, his younger brother Drew and his wife Morgana were also in town visiting and the ratio of 6 adults to 2 children was really great. We were actually able to relax a bit and also see some friends who also live in town!

Let’s start this post with the meals – here are some of the culinary highlights while you’re there.

Food Highlights

After many heavy meals at the water park hotel, I was craving some serious healthy meals—a big salad for lunch hit the spot most days. (Plus crackers not pictured + hummus and/or cheese usually.)

Matt’s dad grilled for us too. One night we had his classic cedar plank salmon which I always love.

yum, yum! Served with sweet potatoes and a vinegar, cucumber and dill salad.

Another BBQ we had was kabobs – also delicious!

Plus a really good Greek salad, rice and tzatziki.

We also had some delicious veggie enchiladas from Blue Apron (<- affiliate link for a discount). Very similar to my Sweet Potato Black Bean Enchiladas recipe, but with rice instead of sweet potatoes.

We also had a few meals along the way. My sister-in-law Morgana and I went to a hot yoga class one morning and then had an early lunch at the Mediterra Cafe in town.

We both had lattes and a large kale salad with chicken, veggies, and squash. It was pretty good and I had enough left over for the next day as it was huge!

Another night Matt and I, Drew and Morgana and some other friends who live in the area went downtown for a concert! My in-laws took care of us very kindly.

We started the evening at a restaurant called The Foundry which was right on the river – cool view! We rarely go into the city proper on our visits these days, so it was fun to be out and about.

We sat inside as it was chilly but the view was quite out the window – would be fun to come back if we could sit outside!

Matt and I shared a large salad, a flatbread pizza, and I had some salmon on my salad portion.

As for the concert, we went to see Judah and the Lion on stage AE which is right in the same area. It was so much fun – they put on a fantastic show.

Downstairs I’m with my friend Sarah from college – we were also roommates in our early/mid 20’s and she’s married to one of Matt’s high school friends!

They now live in Sewickley and it’s always fun to see them and our other local friends when we visit. Most of our original DC crew have now moved back there!

The other meal we had was Easter brunch with the family at Matt’s parents’ club. They had a great buffet and I got a very random selection of things!

fitness fun

On to the fitness adventures of travel!

One morning we took a fun family hike in Sewickley Heights Borough Park:

Matt’s mom Doty and I joined in when Morgana taught a virtual group fitness Pilates class and the kids were mostly entertained/distracted by Matt and Drew, but by the end of the class that was the scene. lol

Have you ever played pickleball? Matt and I previously played while on vacation in Florida in 2018. We met up with friends Tom and Jack and played at their club for an afternoon while the kids played with the grandparents.

It was so much fun! Tom, Jack and I all went to college together and Matt and Tom have been best friends since we were kids. He’s the reason we met – they were all roommates in our early 20’s in DC.

Tom and I also went for a run one morning – Matt originally wanted to do it too, but ended up having to stay behind with Wes and I don’t think he was too disappointed to miss it. 😉

We had a good trip – made it 4 talkative miles!

As for the last day of our trip, Giant loved all the Easter fun!

We are not religious so we skipped the church situation but she had the best time looking for eggs in the yard and was very excited when she found her Easter basket in the morning.

We drove back to DC after dinner on Sunday night and it went smoothly – the kids slept most of the way and we were home by 11:30pm. Not that bad!

We were all very sad to leave but it was nice to be home and let the kids go back to school on Tuesday (Monday was a teachers day).

Have a great weekend and see you back here next week. 🙂
