Slow Cooker Caramelized Onions – Dinners, Dishes and Desserts

Slow Cooker Caramelized Onions – sweet and buttery caramelized onions, all made up in your crockpot. They turn out perfectly every time, without having to stand around and stir all the time!

I love caramelized onions and use them in many different ways. But they can take ages to cook on the stovetop and it can be so finicky to get just the right thing. You can’t have them too hot, too low, stir just the right amount, etc.

Making Caramelized Onions in the Crockpot is super easy and they turn out perfectly every time!

Can I Freeze Caramelized Onions?

Yes, they freeze really well. So if you’re making a very large batch, you can break it up into smaller portions, which is what you would use for each recipe, and store in an airtight container in the freezer. Thaw in the refrigerator, then use as needed or recipe.

Which onions do I use?

You want to use something labeled as a sweet onion. Vidalia onions are the most common and delicious. But many stores have a sweet yellow or white onion, you can use whatever is available.

can i use oil

Yes, I asked for butter in the recipe, and often when I make it on the stovetop I use a combination of both. So you can use whatever you want. You’ll need about 4 tablespoons for 3 large onions, so any combination up to that amount works great.

How do you store leftovers?

Caramelized onions make great leftovers. Just place them in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week. You can reheat them in a pan or just add them to the recipe as needed.
