How to make grilled cheese from the sheet pan

This sheet pan grilled cheese recipe really is the easiest way to make a ton of grilled cheese in one go! Here’s a breakdown of the recipe:

  1. Prepare bread: Spread the softened butter on each side of the sliced bread.
  2. Assemble:Place the bread in a single layer on a baking sheet, top with cheese and close the sandwich with another slice of bread. Then spread the top piece of bread with butter.
  3. Bake: Bake the sandwiches for a few minutes, flip them, and then bake for a few more minutes or until both sides are golden brown and the cheese is melted.

At what temperature do you toast a sandwich in the oven?

I recommend cooking your grilled cheese sandwiches at 400ºF. It’s high enough that the bread is toasted nicely, but not so high that it burns before the cheese is melted.

Tips and hints for grilled cheese from the sheet pan

  • Butter both sides of the bread. The butter adds flavor but also helps the bread get its nice golden brown color and crunchy texture as it bakes. Don’t skip it!
  • butter softened. I recommend softening the butter a bit first so it spreads easily.
  • Leave space between the sandwiches. We want to leave room for the heat to reach the bread and cheese so you get the perfect texture all around the sandwich.
  • Cook on the lowest rack. I recommend keeping your sandwiches on the bottom rack so they have time to cook all the way through without burning and get that nice golden brown crispiness.
  • Check often. Every oven is different, so keep an eye on your sandwiches so you don’t accidentally burn them.
  • Additive: Add mayonnaise. If you like, you can spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of the sandwich. I don’t find it necessary, but some think it adds more buttery flavor and also acts as a barrier so the bread is less likely to burn.

serving suggestions

You absolutely can serve your grilled cheese sandwiches on their own, but you can’t go wrong with a simple side dish to top off your meal. Here are a few ideas:

How to save

Grilled cheese sandwiches are best served immediately. However, any leftovers will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or in the freezer up to 3 months.

When ready to serve again, thaw them in the fridge if they’re frozen, then reheat on the stovetop or back in the oven.
