Plantains are a type of banana and are a staple in many tropical areas. The unripe green fruit is much more starchy and much less sweet than the ripe one.
For this reason, green plantains are used in place of bread or potatoes in many savory recipes, particularly in African, Southeast Asian, and Caribbean cuisines.
Since you can make chips with plantains, we figured why not make some gluten-free croutons with them? So here they are!
Plantain croutons are slightly denser than bread croutons. That’s because plantains are more starchy than fluffy white bread.
And for the same reason, you need to cook the croutons at a lower temperature and longer to get deliciously crispy results without burning them.
So follow our baking instructions closely and you’ll have perfect croutons – guaranteed! And if you prefer to pan fry them or air fry them, we explain how to cook them in the FAQ section.
The standard ingredients make 120g (4 oz) of croutons and one serving is 30g (1 oz).

Do you use green or black plantains to make croutons?
You must use unripe green plantains to make plantain croutons, not the overripe black ones.
Green plantains are more like a potato than a banana in both flavor and texture.
They’re starchy and don’t taste sweet, which is exactly what you want to make as an alternative to bread croutons.
Are Trader Joe’s Plantain Croutons vegan?
Trader Joe’s plantain croutons are vegan because they’re made with sunflower oil and spices.
However, not all croutons recipes are vegan, as some butter or fry the croutons instead of oil.
Our plantain croutons recipe is 100% plant-based as we didn’t use butter or dairy, just extra virgin olive oil.
Are plantain croutons gluten-free?
Yes, plantain croutons are gluten-free because they’re made with green plantains instead of wheat bread.
So if you have celiac disease or a gluten intolerance, you can replace classic bread croutons with these plantain crunchies instead.
Are plantain croutons fried?
It’s likely that finished plantain croutons, like Trader Joe’s, are deep fried in oil as they are extremely crispy without being burned.
But if you want to make them at home without the hassle (and smell) of frying, try our Oven Baked Plantain Bites!
What are good seasoning ideas for these croutons?
