Are you looking for a crispy snack to nibble on? Want to try a healthy alternative to classic fried potato chips? look no more!
We have a simple and delicious recipe for you: plantain chips from the air fryer. They’re light and crispy – ready in just 10 minutes. Let’s do it!
While savory fruit chips may sound odd, frying green banana chips is actually one of the most common ways to prepare this tropical fruit.
Plantains, also known as plantains or green bananas, are a staple food in Africa, the Caribbean islands and South America.
They are larger than a regular banana and can be found as unripe green fruit or ripe yellow fruit.
Green plantains are firm, starchy and flavorless, perfect for cooking and preparing savory recipes like these plantain chips or seasoned plantain croutons.
The ripe fruit is instead great to be eaten raw, baked, or used in desserts.
Plantain chips are so popular that you can find them under so many different names in different areas: chives in Peru and Ecuador, Mariquitas in Cuba, platanites in Colombia, tajadas in Honduras, and even as upper in southern Indian Kerala.
For this recipe, you will need green plantains, which you can find at your local Caribbean grocery store. After slicing them into thin chips, all you have to do is season and cook them.
But instead of frying them like the traditional way, you can bake or air fry the chips for an oil-free recipe.
The hot air fryer is perfect for baking crispy fries no oil neededso it was our first choice for this recipe.
Just make sure to lay the fries flat in the machine basket without overlapping them so they get crispy and don’t stick together.
Skipping the oil means your plantains are crisp really healthy. We’ve used salt and black pepper for added flavor, but feel free to use stronger spices like paprika, thyme, rosemary, or chili powder.
Since green plantains are high in starch, the chips taste almost like potato chips or even crackers. Yet a 40g serving has only 130 calories and zero fat. Impressively!
And what better way to enjoy these homemade chips than by dunking them in a healthy dip. We love them with guacamole and beet hummus, but we can’t resist grabbing them straight from the bag too!
