Orange Juice Recipe (Easy and Homemade)


Bright and sweet orange juice is delicious enjoyed on its own for a healthy drink or incorporated into your favorite drink recipes. And it’s very easy to make fresh orange juice at home even without a permanent juicer. Here I am sharing step by step instructions on how to make orange juice using a blender or mixer.

Fresh oranges are not only delicious, but enjoying them raw as juice is an excellent way to get the most nutrients possible from the fruit. Each sip is packed with vitamin C, vitamin A and some fiber.

If you have an electric juicer, making a healthy glass of almost any juice is basically effortless. However, if you’re like me and don’t have a permanent juicer, you might be a little hesitant about trying to squeeze oranges at home.

I’m here to show you how easy it can be to make orange juice in a mixer or blender – no special countertop gadgets required!

Blend the peeled orange segments with or without sugar and/or lemon juice, squeeze a little and enjoy! Orange juice is great for drinking or can be used to make mocktails, smoothies or even baked goods and desserts.

Step by step guide

How to make orange juice

1. First peel the orange. Remove the pith and white layers from the orange portion.

You can put them in a bowl and chill in the fridge before blending for 20 to 30 minutes, if you want to chill it. When ready, add the orange segments to a mixie jar or blender jar.

2. Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. This is optional and you can skip it if you want. However, I really like how the tartness of the lemon balances out the sweetness of the orange.

If you plan to refrigerate before drinking, this will help the juice taste fresher for a little longer.

3. Run the mixer or blender on low to medium speed for a few seconds, until the mixture is smooth and the oranges are pulverized.

Avoid mixing too much though, as we only need to crush the parts and don’t want to pulverize the seeds. You can also use the pulse option of a mixer or blender.

4. Set a strainer over a bowl, and pour in the juice. You can use a juice strainer or a mesh strainer.

6. Use a spoon to press and remove the pulp to help strain out the juice. Keep doing this until as much juice as possible has drained into the bowl.

7. After straining out all the juice you should only be left with stringy pulp. You need to discard the pulp as it will be bitter or you can add it to your compost.

8. Immediately pour the orange juice into two tall glasses and serve.

Benefits of Orange Juice

The first and foremost thing about freshly made orange juice at home is that you will be getting plenty of essential nutrients like vitamins C, A and minerals like potassium and folate. It’s also low in calories, and even more, if you don’t use any added sweeteners in the case of naturally sweet oranges.

Some more health benefits of orange juice are mentioned below:

  • Orange juice is full of antioxidants. Hence, good for protection against diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
  • Since it is a great source of vitamin C, it supports the immune system (thus, also reduces inflammation) and helps fight the common cold.

If your orange isn’t sweet enough, you can add a teaspoon of your favorite sweetener such as honey, molasses or granulated sugar.

How long does homemade orange juice keep?

I recommend that you enjoy the fresh juice as soon as possible. You can refrigerate for an hour or more. Since there are no preservatives, it will start to taste bitter if it sits for too long.

Can I add salt to this orange juice recipe?

Yes, you can definitely add some regular white salt or even black salt to this recipe. This will help balance the sweetness of the orange juice.

What other recipes can I make with homemade orange juice?

Fresh orange juice made in a blender is great to include anytime a recipe calls for it. Use it to make eggless fruit cakes, orange cakes, and orange muffins.

  • Peel the oranges and add orange segments to a mixie jar or blender jar.

  • Add 1 tablespoon lemon juice. This is optional and you can skip it if you want.

  • Run the mixer or blender on low to medium speed for a few seconds until the mixture is smooth and the oranges are pulverized. Avoid mixing too much as we only need to crush the parts and not the seeds.
  • When the seeds are crushed, the juice will become bitter. So don’t mix it up at a stretch. You can also use blender’s pulse option. If you prefer, you can remove the seeds from the oranges before juicing.
  • Line a juice strainer over a bowl or pan. Pour the orange juice into the juice strainer.

  • Strain the juice with a spoon. Keep pressing and stirring the spoon, so that all the juice is well drained.

  • After all the juice has been squeezed out you should only be left with stringy orange pulp.

  • The juice will be collected in the bowl or pan. You can sweeten it by adding some sugar or honey or jaggery to the juice if you want.

  • Pour the orange juice into glasses and serve immediately.

  • Try including sweet-tasting oranges so you don’t need to add any extra sweetener. If orange is not sweet then you need to add some sugar or honey or your favorite sweetener.
  • Drink the juice as soon as it is ready. Do not keep it for several hours as it will turn bitter.
  • For chilled juice, refrigerate oranges or orange segments for a few hours.
  • Recipes can be scaled.
