Happy St. Patrick’s Day week! If you’re looking for a fun baking project to try then I just love this One Bowl Beer Bread. It has simple ingredients that you probably have on hand, and I like to boost the flavors with some cheddar cheese and chives.
If you’re new to baking or just want to try something quick, this is about the best there is! You just stir everything together in a big bowl and then cook it and it’s perfect every time.
Which beer to use for beer bread?
There’s a million beers out there, but trust me when I say you should save the IPAs for drinking! I wouldn’t use super bitters if you can avoid it. This gives the bread a strange taste.
Instead, choose a lighter beer like a lager or a smooth darker beer like a stout or porter. Personally, I like to use a lighter lager that has a lot of bubbles and fizz.
If you don’t have a beer, you can use soda water for this recipe!
Does beer bread taste like beer?
Mostly no. Using a stronger beer like an IPA or similar will add some flavor to the bread. More often than not, however, the beer adds fizz and a little yeast and caramel flavor to the bread.
But it definitely doesn’t taste like beer.
Prepare One Bowl Beer Bread
This is an incredibly easy bread to make. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a large bowl, then add the cheddar and chives, if using.

Mix it all together and you have a rustic looking batter!

Believe it or not, this looks great.
Transfer that to a lightly greased loaf pan (9×5 works well), then pour the melted butter over it. You can omit the butter, but it adds a lot of flavor and gives the bread’s topping a really crunchy, delicious texture.

Bake the bread for 55-60 minutes at 375ËšF until puffed and golden brown.
I was so excited to cut into this sucker!
The beer bread needs to cool down a bit before you take it out and cut it into slices. It has a soft texture with a crispy outer crust. You can add butter, but it’s great without the toppings.

What do you serve with beer bread?
I like to serve this as a hearty breakfast sandwich, maybe with a sprinkle of honey.
A slice of this good beer bread, warmed up in a pan or toaster, makes a great breakfast. You can also serve it as an accompaniment to stews, chili or soups!

How do I store the bread?
I keep this bread in the fridge wrapped in foil or in an airtight container. Holds up great for at least a week. Then slice and reheat in a skillet over medium-high heat or in a toaster oven!
You can also freeze this bread without hesitation. Once cool, wrap tightly in plastic wrap and freeze, or you can freeze the sliced bread. It keeps for a good three months in the freezer and can then be slowly thawed on the counter or in the microwave if you’re in a hurry.
