Old Fashioned Raisin Bars – The Southern Lady Cooks

These old-fashioned raisin bars are easy to make and a wonderful treat. Imagine a delicious spice cake with raisins and maple glaze. The topping gives these raisin bars that certain something!

You know we love our old fashioned recipes and this one is a winner. The recipe we found didn’t have any frosting, that was our addition and we all agreed… the frosting is great. With the spices and the raisins it really gives a wonderful taste. This recipe also consists of simple ingredients.

  • all purpose flour
  • baking powder
  • Salt
  • Cinammon
  • pimento
  • Ground carnations
  • raisins
  • Water
  • butter
  • granulated sugar
  • egg
  • pecans or walnuts

There are so many great spices in it and then you add the raisins and it’s so good. We always soak the raisins so they are plump and the texture is perfect. A lot of people don’t like raisins, but I’ve found that many people enjoy them when pureed and added to baked goods.

One of the many great things about these bars…no blender required! So no need to wash out the blender, you just need a spoon and you’re done! We love easy recipes that don’t require a lot of cleanup and this is one of them. Many of the old-fashioned recipes made without a blender are delicious like this one do nothing cake. It’s that simple and has wonderful reviews.

This old-fashioned raisin bar recipe is one of our favorites with maple glaze!

  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon Cinammon
  • 1 teaspoon pimento
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground carnations
  • 1 Cup raisins
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1 Stick butter or 8 tablespoons or 1/2 cup
  • 1 Cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 Cup Chopped nuts pecans or walnuts

Topping for raisin bars:

  • 2 tablespoon butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract can use vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups confectionery sugar
  • Enough milk to spread or enough milk to drizzle over the raisin bars.
  • Mix flour, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, allspice and cloves in a bowl.

  • Add raisins to 1 cup water and bring to a boil on stovetop. Remove and stir in butter and sugar until melted. (Can be placed warm on the stove again if butter and sugar need to be melted)

  • Stir into the flour mixture with a spoon. Add the egg and continue beating until all the ingredients are combined. Make sure the flour mixture is not hot when you stir in the egg.

  • Spray a 9 x 13 casserole dish with cooking spray. Spread the mixture in the pan.

  • Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Take out and let cool. Add the topping below.

Instructions for topping:

Makes 18 to 20 bars depending on how big you cut them.
