🍵Matcha with coffee: is it good?
I know, I didn’t really trust this one either. But this combination is surprisingly good!
Matcha is, like coffee, an acquired taste. On the first try, you might not like it. However, many people initially did not like matcha — and coffee — he eventually grew to appreciate its distinct flavor.
In this recipe, the matcha tends to come out strong, the coffee flavors come through as a nice aftertaste. Adding milk to this drink makes it less bitter and creamier.
If you’re wondering if this drink is good for you, know that both coffee and matcha powder share some health benefits. Mixing the two sugar-free also gives you a drink that’s low in calories and loaded with antioxidants.
☕ What is matcha coffee?
This drink, also called Dirty Matcha, is literally matcha mixed with coffee, milk and a sweetener. For this recipe, I use a shot of espresso, but it can also be made with cold brew, for those who don’t have an espresso machine at home.
You can also try using instant or brewed coffee. By making it with instant or regular coffee, the matcha taste comes out stronger. At the end of this post, I’ll give you all possible ingredient substitutions.

🍃Which Matcha should I use?
For the best flavor and health benefits, it is important to use a good quality matcha powder. The greener it is, the better its quality and taste.
However, since we don’t drink it neat, and ceremonial/premium grade matcha can be expensive, I say it’s okay to use a simpler, less expensive powder. Just make sure you use pure matcha, and not one with added milk and/or sugar.

📝 Ingredients
We are using 4 ingredients (plus ice) for this recipe:
- Coffee: if you can make an espresso, go for it. If you don’t have an espresso machine, I’ll give you all possible substitutions in the notes on the recipe card.
- Simple Syrup: the sweetener I use for my raw matcha. If you don’t have (or don’t want to make) simple syrup, you can use sugar or any sweetener of your choice.
- Matcha powder: you can use ceremonial/premium quality matcha for this recipe, or stick with a cheaper version of green tea powder.
- Milk: whole, semi-skimmed or skim milk works for this drink. If you’re looking for a vegan or dairy-free version, you can substitute almond, soy, or oat milk. Use the unsweetened, unflavored version.
🥄 How to do it
Prepare a shot of espresso. I like to use a dark roast like Starbucks Sumatra for this recipe.
Prepare matcha. Mix the matcha powder with hot water and whisk until the powder is fully incorporated and there are no lumps.
- If you are not using simple sugar syrup, but sugar, add sugar to this mixture and beat until combined.
Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.

Pour in simple syrup, then the matcha.

Coconut milk changes the taste of this recipe. If you’re opting for a plant-based milk, the best choices for this recipe are oat, soy, or almond milk, unsweetened and unflavored (unsweetened vanilla flavor is fine).
Yes, but replacing espresso with instant or brewed coffee will make a more “watered down” version. Mix 1 teaspoon of instant coffee with 4 ounces of water.
Is possible. Skip the ice cubes, mix matcha with simple syrup, hot milk and a dash of espresso. For a creamier drink, froth the milk before blending.
You can make this recipe ahead of time. If you do, keep it refrigerated and only add ice before consuming, or the matcha coffee will be watery.
