UN-hosted online platform The Consus Fashion and Lifestyle Network has recognized South Korea’s Sita as the world’s only zero-waste company.
In particular, the brand has been lauded for developing a method that quickly decomposes plastic product containers. Siita’s empty containers are collected by the company and converted into organic compost, which is then delivered to nearby farms. The process is said to be faster and cheaper than other methods of breaking down plastic, taking just three months. In comparison, plastic can take hundreds of years to break down in landfills.
“Sita is the only company in the world that makes products made of biodegradable plastic. All Siita products are fully biodegradable and return to nature,” said The Conscious Fashion & Lifestyle Network
Sita’s entire range, which mainly consists of face and body care creams, is completely vegetarian. A percentage of every sale is donated to underprivileged communities.

Alternative to plastic
A growing number of companies are now working to create more sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging. Notpla has developed a seaweed-based plastic that is fully edible and biodegradable, while Ecovative creates sustainable packaging from mushrooms.
Recently, packaging giant Tetra Pak announced that it is investigating methods to create sustainable fiber-based materials that could be used to create the “food packaging of the future.” Meanwhile, Sita has pledged to stop using plastic altogether, and will give up its use of plastic decomposition technology for free.
“It’s a great honor to be named as a model case for sustainability,” a company spokesperson said. “Under our mission to ‘keep the planet alive’ we will continue to provide eco-friendly solutions and invest in sustainability.”
