Ingredients needed for Irish Soda Bread:
butter
all purpose flour
Sugar
baking powder
baking powder
Salt
raisins
buttermilk
Extra butter or margarine for brushing
As you can see, this bread does not require yeast. The sourdough comes from the buttermilk and baking soda. So it’s a simple quick bread, but it’s absolutely delicious. This firm crust with a soft center is delicious. We love the raisins in this bread, but if you’re not a fan, skip them.
According to legend, the cross or X is cut into the top of the bread to ward off evil spirits. Don’t leave out the X!!!
“May the goblins be near you
To spread happiness on your way
Like all Irish angels
Smile on St. Patrick’s Day”
“Oh my god, this is so good. I added cumin because my MIL always does and it’s amazing. I’m Italian but my MIL family used a recipe from their Irish side of the family that has been passed down for many years and I never liked Irish soda bread until she made it for me. This is very similar to our family recipe. Very easy to make and I’m making a double batch right now while we eat the first bread… …I won’t worry about the calories. Thanks TSLC for another great recipe!!” – Teresa

Irish soda bread
This traditional Irish soda bread is easy and a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
Servings: 1 loaf
- 3 tablespoon butter or margarine softened
- 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 tablespoon Sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 1/2 Cup raisins
- 1 Cup buttermilk
- Extra butter or margarine for brushing
-
In a large bowl, whisk together the butter in the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until it looks like fine crumbs. (I use a fork for this. Some people use a dough mixer)
-
Stir in the raisins and buttermilk. (I soak my raisins in boiling water for 30 minutes, but it’s not necessary).
-
Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead several times until smooth. Shape into a round loaf. Place on a sprayed baking sheet.
-
Cut an X shape about 1/2 inch deep into the top of the loaf. Brush the bread with melted butter before baking and several times during baking. Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 35 to 45 minutes until golden brown.
According to legend, the cross or X is cut into the top of the bread to ward off evil spirits. Don’t leave out the X!!!
