Ingredients for Irish Brown Bread recipe

To make this Irish Brown Bread recipe you will need:

  • butter
  • whole wheat flour
  • unbleached all-purpose flour
  • Oats
  • baking powder
  • fine salt

Preheat your oven to 350°.

Melt 2 tablespoons unsalted butter and use some to grease the inside of a 6×9 loaf pan, then set both aside. Save the memory of the melted butter for the dough.

In a mixing bowl, measure and add 1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour, 1/3 cup all-purpose unbleached flour, 1/3 cup oats, 2 teaspoons baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon fine salt.

Whisk to combine and set aside.

In a separate bowl, measure and add 2 cups of buttermilk (I use regular, not low-fat) and 2 large eggs.

Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and pat it firmly on the counter a few times to set and remove air pockets. Flatten the top of the dough with the spatula. Sprinkle with a few pinches of oatmeal.

Bake on the middle shelf for 40 minutes.

Remove after 40 minutes and run a dull knife along the edge of the bread to loosen it. Using oven mitts, carefully turn the bread onto a rimmed baking sheet and turn it right side up. Bake another 10 minutes.

  • 2 tablespoon unsalted butter , melted
  • cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 Cup unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 Cup Oats
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • Preheat your oven to 350°.

  • Melt butter in a saucepan. Use a pastry brush to grease the inside of a 6×9 bread loaf pan. Put the remaining butter aside.

  • In a large bowl, measure and add flour, rolled oats, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine. Using a spatula, make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Step aside for a moment.

  • In a separate mixing bowl, measure and add buttermilk and eggs. Whisk together and pour into the well of the dry ingredients. Use a spatula to mix until just combined. Pour in the remaining melted butter and stir to incorporate.

  • Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and pat it firmly on the counter a few times to set and remove air pockets. Flatten the top of the dough with the spatula. Sprinkle with a few pinches of oatmeal.
