Ingredients for a great BLT sandwich

One of the special things about this sandwich is that it only contains a handful of ingredients: bread, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise!

Bacon: Thick-cut, crispy bacon is the perfect bacon for this recipe. Cook bacon in the oven to make crispy bacon the easy and simple way! If you don’t have bacon, you can use ham slices, Canadian bacon, pancetta, or turkey bacon. Each one adds their own delicious flavor to this recipe!

lettuce: Use green leaf lettuce, iceberg lettuce, butter lettuce, or romaine lettuce. You can leave them whole, but I love thinly shredded lettuce in my sandwiches.

Tomatoes: It goes without saying that great BLT is made from the best ripe, juicy tomatoes possible. I love beefsteaks because you only need a few slices for a hearty sandwich. Roma tomatoes are firm and full of flavor.

Bread: Almost any bread is perfect for a BLT sandwich; I find thicker breads hold up better. Think beyond plain white bread – try sourdough, rye or a loaf of homemade bread.

Delicious additions and variations

There are many variations of the BLT. Do one BALT by adding avocado or a BELT by serving with an egg in the middle! Or try these delicious variations:

  • Sharp: Make this a great twist on jalapeno poppers and add some cream cheese and sliced jalapenos, green chiles, and horseradish.
  • mayonnaise: Add some hot mustard for a great sauce or try chipotle mayonnaise.
  • Vegetables: Add cucumber, coleslaw, onion, or sauerkraut slices.

Enjoy the flavors of a classic BLT and turn it into a BLT Grilled Cheese or BLT Pasta Salad for a fun and delicious twist!
