It’s a Summer Life Skills Day! This post will show you the easiest and best way to do it how to cut a watermelon cut into cubes of any size.

The easiest way to cut a watermelon
Eating cold watermelon straight from the fridge is one of summer’s greatest joys.
Despite my love for this naturally hydrating, highly refreshing fruit, I very rarely buy or cut a watermelon. Why? ‘Cause it’s a pain At least I thought so.
However, everything has changed thanks to this simple method of cutting watermelon.
As it turns out, I was slicing the watermelon wrong the entire time.
Now that I can cut a watermelon properly, we have it in our fridge almost every day and I’m a happy summer girl.
I have my sister to thank for the knowledge of how best to cut a watermelon. Her 2 and 4 year old daughters absolutely adore it (smart little ladies) so she set about speeding up the slicing process for the good of everyone, especially for herself as the head watermelon slicer.
Below is a step by step guide on how to cut a watermelon. I have attached both photos and a video.
This is hands down the easiest way to cut a watermelon you will find!

Use and storage of sliced watermelon
Once I cut the watermelon into chunks, I like to split my bounty in two.
- I keep half in the fridge to snack on right away. Cool, fresh watermelons always hit the spot.
- I freeze the other half in a ziplock bag to make a creamy watermelon smoothie. See below for tips on freezing watermelon.
Other ways to use diced watermelon: You can use them to make a great big fruit salad, or go a little sweeter and savory with this Watermelon Feta Salad with Mint Avocado and Lime.
In this post, you will not only learn how to properly cut a watermelon, but also helpful tips on how to pick a watermelon, how to tell if a watermelon is ripe, how best to store it, and more.
Choosing the perfect watermelon
One of the keys to delicious watermelon is choosing the right variety. Here are a few tips on how to choose the perfect watermelon:
- Look for a matte rather than glossy watermelon, as glossy watermelons are often overgrown.
- Choose a plant with no visible bumps or holes, as this can indicate watering problems or bugs.
- A heavy watermelon is a juicy watermelon. Pick up a few of these to see which one feels the heaviest for its size.

This is how you can tell when the watermelon is ripe
These tips will help you choose a perfectly ripe and juicy watermelon.
- A ripe watermelon should make a hollow sound when tapped or tapped on the rind.
- The rind should not scratch easily or yield under light pressure.
- There is a so-called “field spot” on the underside of the watermelon. When a watermelon is ripe, this spot should be yellow.
How to cut a watermelon
This is the absolute best way to cut a watermelon into chunks. You can also use it to make any size watermelon cubes and cut watermelon sticks.
- Rinse and dry the whole watermelon.

- Cut it in half crosswise (you end up with two round pieces instead of oblongs).
- Cut off the stem end.
- Place the watermelon cut-side down on a cutting board.

- Hold your knife at an angle and slice towards the cutting board to remove the skin and white flesh. After making the cuts, you should see the dark pink inside of the watermelon (pictured above).
- Keep slicing until all of the peel is removed.

- Cut the watermelon into three pieces, creating three round pieces.

- Cut the circles into sticks.

- Cut the stalks into cubes.
- Repeat the process with the other round pieces and then with the other watermelon half.
- Chill the cubes in the refrigerator (if desired). ENJOY!
Top!
If you’re looking for other cool ways to cut a watermelon, in Step 7 (when the watermelon is cut into thirds) you can use a cookie cutter to punch out shapes instead of cutting the melon into cubes or sticks. Stars would be festive for the 4th of July or Labor Day, or hearts for a special celebration.
