How to make the best blue cheese dressing (or dip).
This better-than-store-bought blue cheese dressing is incredibly easy to make and you probably already have most of the ingredients you need in your kitchen. This creamy dressing is just as easy to make as our Buttermilk Ranch Dressing, this Creamy Caesar, and our Homemade Italian Vinaigrette (which doubles as a marinade)!

Here’s what you need to prepare it:
sour cream and mayonnaise — For the best blue cheese dressing, use both. A combination of sour cream and mayonnaise makes the dressing extra creamy. Mayonnaise can be heavy on its own. Adding sour cream loosens up the dressing a bit. If you’re used to just using mayonnaise, try adding a little sour cream next time. It’s a game changer. If you feel like it, you can also prepare homemade mayonnaise. Here is our mayonnaise recipe for every taste. (We use the same combination of mayonnaise and sour cream to make this creamy honey mustard sauce.)
Blue Cheese – Use a blue cheese you love. We usually go for something that isn’t too expensive and tastes rich and creamy. Gorgonzola is a good option.

Fresh Parsley — We’re big fans of fresh herbs, so we add them to almost everything. Fresh parsley adds color and flavor to the dressing.
salt and pepper — The mayonnaise and cheese contain some salt, but we always add some extra salt to the dressing at the end to bring out the flavor. Pepper adds some spice.
milk or water — Depending on what you want to use the dressing for, you can add a little milk or water. Without them, the dressing is thick, making it perfect for dipping. If you want it to be pourable like a salad dressing, a splash of milk or water is key.
Just a few seconds of stirring transforms the dressing into a creamy and delicious mixture.
For a lighter dressing with fewer caloriesyou can substitute light mayonnaise for the mayonnaise and plain yogurt for the sour cream.
How long does Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing last?
Here’s the great news This easy homemade dressing will keep in the fridge for about a week. We love making a double serving so we can add it to salads, use in a veggie dipping sauce, or spoon it onto dinner all week long.
In fact, we now have a jar in our fridge, ready for our favorite dishes. Here are a few suggestions for using this easy blue cheese dressing:
- Forget the store-bought salad dressing and use it on your favorite homemade salads. It tastes particularly delicious with young leafy greens, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, peppers, cauliflower and broccoli. It also goes great with salads to which you add fruit (like grapes, apples or pears).
- Swap out the traditional dressing and use this Blue Cheese Dressing to make coleslaw.
- Transfer to a small bowl and use as a dip for fresh veggies, roasted veggies (like these sweet potato fries), or anything buffalo-flavored. We especially love these Chicken Wings, this Buffalo Chicken Rice Bowl, and these Baked Buffalo Cauliflower Wings.

4Store well covered in the refrigerator for a week.
Adam and Joanne’s tips
- Lemon juice is optional, but if you have a lemon on hand, we recommend adding some lemon juice. It gives the dressing a nice fresh flavor.
