Themes
While we like using the flavor/color combination of Lime Jello and Grape Jello, any variation will work well. Grape or Lime Jello with Orange Jello would also be perfect to use if making Halloween Jello Shots.
- Hocus Pocus – Make 3 layers to represent the three Sanderson sisters (orange, purple, green).
- Bloody Vampire – Use red-colored jello and red gel to portray a “bloody vampire” theme.
- Witch’s Brew – Use lime green jello, whipped cream and edible glitter.
- Candy Corn – You can always go with a classic Candy Corn theme with yellow, orange and white Jello!

How Much Booze In Each Jello Cup
Each shot has approximately 2/3 oz of booze, while a regular shot has approximately 1.5 oz. These Jello shots have quite a bit less alcohol than a traditional shot.
As written, the recipe calls for 1/2 cup of alcohol per 3 oz. box. If you’re looking to step it up a bit, replace up to 1/4 cup of the cold water with extra booze. Do not add more than this as the gelatin won’t set properly.
To make a batch for ‘non drinkers’, just add extra water or another liquid, like cranberry juice, 7-up, etc. in place of the booze.

How Many Does This Make
Here’s a quick guideline to help you determine what size box of Jello you should get.
- 3.2 oz Box of Jello – 16-18 jello cups
- 6 oz Box of Jello – 32-34 jello cups
We use 2 oz. jello cups. The above estimate will change if you use smaller or larger jello cups.
Halloween Shots
Here are some fun garnish ideas to kick this party favor up a notch!
- Whipped Cream
- Sprinkles or Edible Stars
- Candy (think Pop Rocks, Skittles or Gummy Worms)
- ….Or just turn them into Halloween Syringe Shots! Fill half with the green and half with the purple. No garnish needed!

Tips For Success
- Use a large measuring cup with a pour spout for a clean liquid-to-cup transfer.
- Place empty jello cups on a cookie sheet for ease of clean up and refrigeration.
- Refrigerate for a minimum of 1 hour in between layers. Anything less will make the layers run together.
- Plan for a 3 hours minimum refrigeration period; ideal is at least 4.
- Keep the shots refrigerated until ready to serve to keep the firm texture.
- Jello shots can be made up to 2 days in advance. Just place the plastic tops on the shots as to ensure a gross film won’t coat the top and change the texture and flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Freeze Jello Shots? You can, but they won’t be the same. Vodka has a high ethanol level, so it doesn’t total freeze when placed in a conventional at-home freezer. In addition, the gelatin bonds deteriorate when thawing. So, we don’t recommend freezing them.
Our motto at the end of a party: Toss ’em, shoot ’em, or give ’em away!
How Long Do Jello Shots Last? Truth be told, we never have leftovers. If you do, these can last up to 5 days in the refrigerator. Read up on the benefits and safety of gelatin.
