How to make a Halloween Sausage Board

The cheese

I always like to have a wide variety of cheeses because everyone is different in what they prefer, but I like to serve at least 3 different types on my board – firm, soft and semi-firm cheeses. Here’s what I used:

  • Cheddar cheese – this is always a classic and the bright orange looks great to match the Halloween theme. I used these super cute Halloween cookie cutters to cut pumpkins out of the cheese and then diced any leftover cheese because we are NOT wasting cheese here!
  • Brie – I like to have a variety of firm and soft cheeses on my board and creamy brie is always a winner! I cut little ghosts out of the brie using these little cookie cutters and you can even top them with some honey or jam. You just want to make sure the brie is really cold and set before using the cutters, otherwise the cheese will become too soft. I also found it helpful to cut the brie in half before using the cutters as not only do you get twice as many ghosts but it is so much easier to push the cutter through!
  • Jalapeño Pepper Jack – I love a tangy cheese option and this is always on my boards. I dice the cheese to add height and dimension, but you can make cheese slices or even leave it whole. Smoked Gouda and goat cheese are other delicious options!
  • mozzarella balls – So mozzarella isn’t a cheese I usually add to my boards, but they were perfect “eyeballs” for my spooky Halloween spread! I placed these fun candy eyeballs over the balls and arranged them in a bowl to add some variety to the board.

The meat

In addition to the cheeses, I always like to have different types of sausage on the board. Arranging them in a fun way is a great way to fill in any gaps, while adding different textures and dimensions to the overall board. Here’s what I used:

  • prosciutto – this is always a favorite on cheese boards and since I was working with a skeleton I thought it would be fun to fill the chest with some of that ham! I did this by rolling the meat, then cutting the rolls in half and placing them cut side into the skeleton.
  • Genoa salami – you can’t go wrong with this choice and I like that this salami is easy to work with when styling your board. I like to either fold them up and arrange them around the cheese or bowls, or you can stack the salami in certain areas to fill in gaps and add some dimension.

Fresh and dried fruit

When building this Halloween themed board I wanted to stick to fruit that is plentiful this season. Fruit is always a hit and the sweetness pairs so well with the salty and savory flavors on the board. Here’s what I used:

  • grapes – I LOVE putting grapes on my board any time of the year! They always look amazing when they’re on display and the green color goes really well with the Halloween colors we’re going for.
  • blackberries – the deep, gorgeous color of blackberries just screams “creepy” to me! Figs are another great option.
  • apple pieces – fresh apples are popular for the autumn season! I used green apples to match the board colors, but any type of apples will work.
  • Dried apricots – I like to have a mix of fresh and dried fruit on my charcuterie boards and this orange color just fits the theme.

Assortment of crackers

Your cheese needs a vehicle, right?? I like to use an assortment of different types of crackers to add a nice variety and options that everyone will love. Also, try to get crackers of different sizes and shapes. I found some great ones at Trader Joe’s! To display them, you can spread them around the cheeses, fan them out in different places, and even stack them in any gaps you might have on your board. The possibilities are endless and offering a good selection is always a plus!

Creepy Extras!

This is where you add all those little fun items and toppings that will not only make your board look super festive, but so much more lavish!

  • I added some walnuts, chocolate covered peanuts and some allspice filled green olives which added a good spooky element.
  • Other fun options include Marcona almonds, spiced pecans or cashews, other salty foods like pickles, and even delicious spreads like jam, honey, or even hummus.
  • I also decorated it with some fake plastic spiders to make the board look spooky and these fun skeleton hands that added the perfect finishing touch! Oh, and don’t forget the cobwebs!
  • You can also add some fun Halloween candy like classic candy corn or

What kind of board should I use?

Depending on where I display this platter I usually always go for a medium sized board, but this is where you can get creative! Not only do you have to stick to a classic cheese board, you can use a cutting board, a round or square wooden pizza board, different types of serving platters, slate or stone boards, or even a large baking sheet. Any flat surface will honestly work. You can even put some brown paper on top and build it right on your table! Talk about the ultimate centerpiece. Feel free to use whatever you have at home, but THIS board is a personal favorite for everyday entertaining and the handles make it easy to transport!

Tips and tricks for creating this cheese board

  • When assembling your Halloween cheese board, you should start by putting the largest items on it first, e.g. B. small bowls that you use with your cheese for spreads. Working from big to small makes your board a lot easier to build as you can easily drop small items like nuts and dried fruit into piles to fill in gaps.
  • Cutting your cheese a variety of ways, crumble and leave some whole adds great texture and dimension!
  • If you’re using a smaller board, decide on just 2 types of cheese and spread them out in different places on the board. This gives the illusion that your board is fuller and more lush! Alternatively, you can add more textures, shells, and other fun items with an extra large board.
  • Try adding different spreads like fig or apricot jam, honey mustard, hummus or honey to different bowls. Just don’t forget the shakers and cheese knives!
  • Cheese tastes best at room temperature, so I always like to assemble the cheeseboard an hour or 30 minutes in advance and leave it wrapped so the cheese doesn’t dry out.
  • Don’t forget the wine!
