Greek tzatziki sauce is a classic and refreshing bath made with Yoghurt, cucumber, garlic and extra virgin olive oil. It is a staple in Greek cuisine and is usually served as a appetizer or side dish. The sauce has a smooth and creamy texture with a tangy and slightly tart flavor perfectly balanced by the chill of the cucumber.
Tzatziki is a favorite for many people visiting Greece. It is often served as an appetizer, accompanied by fresh bread or pita, and sometimes even as a condiment with grilled meats. This versatile sauce is popular because it is light and refreshing. It’s perfect for hot summer days when a heavy meal isn’t as appealing.
What makes Greek cuisine so special is its emphasis on fresh, simple ingredients. Tzatziki is no exception. The cucumber is finely grated and mixed with Greek yogurt, while the garlic is chopped and added for a bold flavor. Finally, fresh herbs such as dill, mint or parsley can be added to round off the dish. After so much travel in Greece and as a lover of Mediterranean cuisine, it’s no surprise that I love tzatziki so much.
How to make Greek Tzatziki Sauce
First prepare the cucumber for the tzatziki sauce. Choose a seedless cucumber, like an English cucumber. If you must use one with seeds, remove them to ensure desired sauce consistency. Grate the cucumber with the larger holes of a grater. Then extract as much of the liquid as possible by squeezing with your hands or a clean tea towel. Place the drained cucumber in a medium bowl. Add the rest of the ingredients, including Garlic, Greek yogurt, red wine vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. Mix thoroughly and season with salt and pepper. Serve the sauce immediately with fresh crusty bread, flatbread or grissini. Store leftover tzatziki in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
