- milk–Free cream: Use any dairy-free cream, such as soy, oat or thin cashew cream (which works like heavy cream). For a lower-fat version use dairy-free milk (or a 50/50 combination), but the sage cream sauce won’t be as creamy.
- white wine: Use a vegan dry white wine to add depth to the white sauce for the gnocchi. Instead of alcohol, a high-quality vegetable broth will work.
- Dijon mustard: A small amount of sage adds depth to the cream sauce.
- olive oil: or other neutral cooking oil or vegan butter.
- Aromatics: You’ll need onions (although shallots will work too) and garlic. Alternatively, use roasted garlic (to taste).
- the pea: Add a splash of color and extra nutrition with frozen (thawed) peas.

How to Make Gnocchi with Cream Sauce
Follow just a few steps to get this creamy gnocchi recipe on your table in about 20 minutes.
- First, chop the onion and mince the garlic. Next, heat the oil (or vegan butter) in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Once hot, fry the onion for 3 minutes before adding the sage and garlic and fry for a further minute, stirring frequently.
- Add the salt and pepper, mustard, white wine and dairy-free cream to the pan, then stir well and bring to a boil.
- Lower the heat, add the gnocchi to the vegan cream sauce and cook for about 7-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gnocchi are tender and the sauce has thickened.
If it gets too thick, add more cream/milk. If it is not thick enough, let it simmer for a few more minutes.
- Finally, sprinkle the gnocchi with sage Vegan ParmesanTaste it to see if it needs more salt and pepper, then serve and enjoy!
Storage instructions
go ahead: You can prepare the sage cream sauce in advance and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a day or two. Then, when ready, add the gnocchi, cook, and enjoy!
shop: Once cooked, gnocchi are best within the first few hours. However, any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. I don’t recommend freezing it.
Reheat: Reheat creamy gnocchi in a skillet or microwave. Add a splash of vegetable broth or vegan cream/milk to loosen the sauce if needed.

- 1/2 the middle onion finely chopped
- 3 teaspoon fresh the sage finely chopped
