About fruit cream

Fruit Cream aka Fruit Salad with Cream or Cream Fruit Salad is an excellent dessert option as it is quick and easy to prepare. This dessert consists of mixed fruit and whipped cream.

For fruit, I decided to include bananas, pears, dragon fruit, pomegranates, and blueberries. The flavors pair together perfectly!

One thing I love about this dessert is that it contains fragrant rose water. It adds a delicious subtle pink flavor that compliments every fruit.

Also you don’t need to add too much rose water as adding more can offset the delicate aroma of the dish.

If you don’t have rose water on hand, you can substitute vanilla or citrusy orange zest instead. These ingredients also work to enhance the flavor in this dessert.

You have a few options when it comes to fruit. Add mango, berries, jujube, apple, fig, kiwi and sapota (chiku). The most important thing is that you cut the fruits into bite-sized pieces so that the dessert is easy to eat.

Avoid highly acidic fruits like oranges as they do not pair well with dairy foods. Also, watery fruits like watermelon should be avoided as they will release water into the dessert and affect the texture of the whipped cream.

Step by step guide

How to make fruit cream

1. First wash and prepare the fruits you will add to the dessert. Cut them into small cubes or chunks. If you are using small berries, add them whole but if you are adding strawberries, chop them first.

In a bowl add 1 cup of cold whipping cream, ¼ cup of honey and 1 tablespoon of rose water.

Suggestion: If you are not a fan of honey, you can use maple syrup, icing sugar or powdered sugar. Instead of rose water, you can add vanilla extract.

2. Whip until you see soft peaks.

Suggestion: It usually whisks for a few minutes on medium speed to get a soft peak.

3. Add chopped fruits of your choice. I added the following results:

  • 1 dragon fruit
  • ⅓ to ½ cup blueberries (can swap with strawberries or blackberries)
  • 1 banana
  • 1 pear (can be substituted with apple)
  • ⅓ cup pomegranate arils.

If mangoes are in season, add mangoes as they add a delicious tropical flavor to the fruit cream dessert.

Mix the fruit on top of the whipped cream.

4. Gently fold the mixture with the chopped fruit.

5. Serve the fruit cream straight away or you can choose to chill it for a few hours before serving.

Garnish it with 1 tablespoon of chopped pistachios, some pomegranate arils and 1 orange for more flavor.

I recommend adding orange zest as it gives a nice citrusy note to the dessert. Add chopped or chopped almonds of your choice instead of pistachios.

You can choose to drizzle some honey or maple syrup or caramel syrup on top if you like.

Expert tips

  • Vegan: A vegetarian version of this dessert is very easy to make. Use coconut cream or cashew cream instead of dairy whipping cream for the base, and top with maple syrup instead of honey.
  • Results: Although this recipe is easy to adapt, you should avoid certain fruits. A water-based fruit such as watermelon will not work well in a fruit cream salad and the cream will turn runny. You want to avoid this because it will affect the overall texture of the dessert. Acidic fruits should also be avoided as they do not pair well with dairy products.
  • Fruit Puree: You can also use fruit puree to flavor the cream. Mix well the mango, strawberry and raspberry puree with the whipping cream. If you decide to add fruit puree, gently fold in the puree after adding the whipping cream. Then add the chopped mixed fruit and follow the rest of the recipe.
  • Addition: It’s really easy to adapt this dessert to suit your taste. If you want to add some crunch, chop some nuts and add them after mixing in the fruit and cream. You can also add dried fruit for extra sweetness or sweeten it up by adding cardamom powder, grated nutmeg, cinnamon powder, pumpkin spice or vanilla extract.
  • batch: Halve, double, or triple the amount of this dessert depending on how many people you want to feed.

Which fruits should be avoided?

1. Do not include watery fruits like watermelon as they will dilute the cream if you want to refrigerate the dessert for a few hours.

2. Avoid adding citrus fruits as they do not pair well with dairy foods and can cause stomach upset.

3. Remember not to add pineapple as the cream will taste bitter if you refrigerate the dessert.
