Finding dessert ideas for the warmer months can sometimes be tricky. In spring and certainly not in summer you want to serve something steaming hot! But you also want something that won’t fall apart on a hot day. The solution? Banana pudding of course! This works especially well when you need a dessert to feed a crowd. It comes together in just 10 minutes, and the hardest part is just waiting for it to cool. Bring it to your next picnic or BBQ and you’re sure to love it.
Substitute for vanilla waffles
If you don’t have vanilla waffles on hand, or just don’t like them, there are a few alternatives you can use:
- shortbread
- shortbread
- Graham crackers
The key is to try and use a butter-based biscuit. The buttery flavor pairs perfectly with the custard and sliced bananas!
Are there eggs in the pudding?
Some recipes require you to use an egg in the custard. Not ours! Although this dish is not suitable for vegans due to the butter, whipped cream, chocolate, and whipped cream, it does not contain eggs.
bananas
The key to the perfect homemade banana pudding is in the bananas! You want to use the ripest bananas you can find – they should be yellow with small brown spots on the skin. Ripe bananas are much sweeter and the flavor pairs beautifully with custard and waffles.
How do you thicken homemade banana pudding?
The key is in the quick roux! Our recipe calls for you to heat butter and then stir in some cornstarch. This adds thickness and gives you that perfect custard consistency you’re looking for. Make sure you don’t skip this step!
fruit variations
We love keeping our banana pudding recipe as is, but feel free to add some more fruit! Below are some of our favorite combinations – just pick one or mix and match:
- strawberries
- blueberries
- kiwi
- mango
Troubleshooting: How to prevent bananas from turning brown
Some cooks find their banana slices tend to turn an unpleasant brown color. You can avoid this by lightly brushing the fruit with some citrus juice like lemon or lime. Be careful not to use too much as this could affect the flavor of the dessert.
Bakeware options
For our homemade banana pudding recipe, we use a 9×9 casserole dish. If you don’t have one at home, you can use something else of the same size. A dish that holds about 2.5 liters will work well.
