Next time you fire up the grill, give it a try tempeh fritters! This grilled tempeh recipe is like a sponge and absorbs your favorite spices and marinades for your next barbecue.

Tempeh fries are one of my favorite plant proteins! It’s high in protein, but tempeh absorbs the flavors of the perfect vegetarian meat for grilling. Whenever I prepare grilled tempeh, I choose different marinades to enhance the dishes I plan to serve.

No matter how you marinate the tempeh, grilled tempeh has an incredible smoky flavor.
For example, my BBQ tempeh sandwich is marinated in healthy BBQ sauce. Vegan Tempeh Reuben is marinated in pickle juice, beet juice and spices.
Tempeh kabobs, on the other hand, are marinated with a homemade teriyaki marinade made from natural pineapple. Regardless of the marinade chosen, grilling tempeh is my favorite way to cook it.
What is Tempeh?
Like tofu, tempeh is a soy product. Made from fermented soybeans, tempeh forms a dense cake-like texture. Although tempeh is a soy-based product, it often contains grains, beans, and flavorings. Nutty in flavor and less processed than tofu, tempeh is sometimes overlooked because people don’t know how to cook it. Often, people complain about bitterness and texture. However, when prepared properly, tempeh is a great, healthy meat substitute.
Higher in protein and less processed than tofu, tempeh sometimes gets a bad reputation. However, once cooked properly, you will love tempeh as much as I do.
Grilled Tempeh
First, you will know my best kept little secret! For example, tempeh is naturally bitter and somewhat tough. As a result, Tempeh only absorbs the marinade and takes on a BBQ grill flavor after it is first boiled.
Yes, I said so. Boiling the tempeh for 20 minutes removes the bitterness and then absorbs the marinade like a sponge.
Next, remove the tempeh from the package and cut it in half, making two equal-sized squares. Then, place the tempeh slices in a pan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, cook for 20 minutes, and remove the tempeh from the boiling water to marinate.
Why Boil Tempeh?

- Boiling removes the naturally bitter taste of tempeh.
- This softens the tempeh to make it easier to eat and enjoy.
- and allows for better saturation of the boiling marinade.
I marinate my tempeh in advance to absorb the sauce flavors I plan to use. Whatever the sauce, marinating is a must. This time, I chose a simple steak marinade for the grilled tempeh. But first, let the tempeh cool.

Again, whatever marinade you choose, I suggest marinating overnight for best results. For this tempeh grilled recipe, I decided on simple ingredients. You can choose a bottled sauce instead, but I prefer to make my own sauces and marinades.
Tempeh Steak Marinade

- I willow: Soy sauce imparts an umami flavor to the marinade.
- Vegan Worcestershire Sauce: Vegan Worcestershire Sauce Tangy and rich. I love Annie’s brand.
- Dijon Mustard: Dijon mustard It is a tangy and tasty addition to the marinade, making it tasty and delicious.
- Garlic: I like to use fresh, minced garlic.
- Liquid smoke: Liquid smoke (I used hickory flavor) It is a natural product that condenses wood burning smoke.
- Water: The water in the marinade helps neutralize the other ingredients.
Tempeh replaces steak marinade ingredients
- In the recipes, substitute tamari or liquid aminos for soy sauce, and both options are gluten-free.
- Any brand of vegan Worcestershire sauce works well. Or, use extra soy sauce or tamari.
- Stone ground mustard is a natural replacement for Dijon mustard.
- A clove of garlic is equal to about â…› of a teaspoon of garlic powder.
- Chipotle powder or smoked paprika replace liquid smoke in recipes. For example, 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika = ½ teaspoon of liquid smoke. You can add another ½ teaspoon of regular paprika for color.
How to Grill Tempeh

First, start by allowing the tempeh to marinate as long as possible. Then, preheat the grill to medium or 400 degrees and let it heat through.
- Place the marinated tempeh directly on the grill grate.
- Cook for 16 minutes, rotating 4 times (every 4 minutes) during the 16 minute time frame.
- Remove from the grill and transfer to a cutting board to slice, or serve by allowing your guests to cut their tempeh steaks.

serving ideas

Any way you slice it, grilled tempeh is one of my favorite choices when grilled indoors or outdoors.
