If you’re looking for fresh shrimp at the grocery store, look for it peeled and deveined shrimp. The deveining and peeling process is lengthy, saving you time and frustration.
Can you use frozen shrimp? YES! However, make sure it is completely thawed before preparing this recipe.
Can you use cooked shrimp? You can use pre-cooked shrimp, but we don’t recommend it. If so, just sear them briefly on the grill to heat them up.
Can you cook marinated shrimp on the stovetop instead? Yes! Feel free to sear your shrimp over medium heat in either a cast iron skillet or griddle pan for 2-3 minutes per side.

add the Prawns to the dish with marinade and toss to coat the shrimp in the marinade.
Place the shrimp in the refrigerator and let the shrimp soak in the marinade for 30 minutes to 1 hour, but no longer. If the shrimp has been in the marinade for more than 1 hour, the shrimp may start to cook in the lemon juice.
Preheat grill
While the shrimp are marinating Preheat the grill to 400ºF. Grilling at this temperature ensures your shrimp can cook quickly without overcooking 😀
What type of grill should I use? Feel free to use a gas grill or charcoal grill. Both will work great.

Because if in doubt, grilled shrimp skewers are better! Why? This will ensure none of your delicious shrimp fall through the cooking grates.
Remove the shrimp from the marinade and Thread the shrimp onto a skewer. Be sure to spear the thick part of the shrimp and the tail. Repeat until all shrimp are skewered. You are ready to grill!
You can use either wooden skewers or metal skewers like we did!

Grill shrimp
When the grill reaches 400ºF Place the shrimp skewers on the grill grate over direct heat. Grill 1-2 minutes on each side. Once the shrimp have turned pink and reached one Internal temperature of 145ºFThey know they’re done cooking!
#1 Grilled Shrimp Tip
DO NOT OVERCOOK!
There’s nothing worse than rubbery, chewy shrimp. Make sure you only grill your shrimp for 1-2 minutes on each side and stop when the internal temperature reaches 145ºF.
How do I know my grilled shrimp is done cooking?
The best and most reliable way to tell if your shrimp is done cooking is to measure the internal temperature. Stick a meat thermometer into the thickest part of your shrimp. It should read at least 145ºF.
Your shrimp should be pink, opaque on the sides, and firm to the touch.

Grilled shrimp must-dos
When it comes to grilling shrimp, we like to stick to 3 simple must-dos! Make sure you have the following:
- Fresh shrimp
- Enough time for your shrimp to marinate
- Super short grilling time
Fresh shrimp are the best shrimp: If you buy fresh shrimp from the meat counter, be sure to ask the butcher how old the shrimp are and by when you should use them! If you’re working with frozen shrimp, make sure you use them as soon as they’re completely thawed.
Give your shrimp enough time in the marinade: You want your shrimp to absorb the flavor and oil of the shrimp marinade, so let your shrimp marinate for at least 30 minutes and no longer than an hour.
How long to grill shrimp? Shrimp grills so incredibly quickly compared to other grilled foods like burgers, chicken, or even veggies. We like to put our shrimp on skewers so it’s easy to turn the shrimp in bulk, but you can grill the shrimp without the skewers if you prefer.
pro tip
Grill your shrimp for 1-2 minutes on each side. You’ll know when the shrimp are about to start cooking because they’ll be pink! You can even see the pink color through the marinade.
