The famous Disney Dole whip

Dole Whip’s original recipe is a swirled pineapple soft serve ice cream dessert that tastes like a cross between frozen pineapple yogurt and creamy vanilla ice cream.

It enjoys a certain cult following, often with long lines of up to an hour at the places where it’s served.

There’s even an app that tells hungry tourists how much longer they have to wait.

This classic frozen treat is only available at a few select locations, the most notable being EPCOT and Aloha Island near the Tiki Room in Disney’s Magic Kingdom.

Since it’s so hard to come by, I’ve only tried the original a few times in my life.

Based on these memories of a chilled, smooth, fresh pineapple confection with a slight lemon flavor, I came up with my own Disney copycat Dole Whip recipe that you can make in the comfort of your own kitchen. It only takes five minutes to make!

Ingredients for Dole Pineapple Whip

What you need: frozen pineapple, milk of your choice, your favorite sweetener, a small pinch of salt, and a tablespoon of lemon juice. That’s it!

There’s no cool whip, pineapple juice, or evaporated milk in these homemade Dole Whip ingredients.

You can use either chopped fresh pineapple or canned pineapple. Just make sure to empty the can of pineapple completely. Freeze the pineapple before blending.

For a dairy-free and vegan Dole Whip, opt for a plant-based milk like almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk, or use dairy-free heavy cream or coconut cream.

My favorite way to make Pineapple Dole Whip is with canned coconut milk because it gives the thickest, creamiest results and makes you feel like you’re in Hawaii! Feel free to use any milk you like.

The sweetener of choice can be regular sugar, date sugar, pure maple syrup, honey, or pretty much any neutral all-purpose sweetener. If you want to make Dole Whip with no added sugar, options that work are erythritol, xylitol, or stevia.

Where can you find the dessert?

You can find Dole Whip with original soft serve ice cream at Disney theme parks including the refreshment post at EPCOT, the snack shack at Typhoon Lagoon Water Park and on Aloha Island in the Magic Kingdom.

The dairy-free pineapple dessert is also available at Dole Pineapple Plantation, which began as a fruit stand on Oahu, Hawaii in 1950.

Apparently, demand for Dole Whips is so great that they’ve started selling cones and floats at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor amusement parks.

Some restaurants, ice cream parlors, and other locations outside of Disneyland and Disney World in the United States now also sell Dole pineapple whip.

And from April 2023, packaged Dole Whip will be available in grocery store freezers. Flavors include pineapple, strawberry, and mango.

Vegan pineapple whip

Surprisingly, the popular Disney dessert is vegan. They reformulated the recipe a few years ago, and the pineapple, mango, strawberry, raspberry, watermelon, and orange flavors are all gluten-free, trans-fat-free, and vegan.

This homemade version can also be easily made vegan if you use your favorite non-dairy milk. For a low-fat, low-calorie option, try almond milk.

Of course, the recipe does not contain eggs.

Next on my list of Disney recipes to make at home are the cinnamon sugar churros. Don’t be surprised if you see a recipe for it here soon one day!

How to Make Homemade Dole Whip

How to Make Pineapple Dole Whip

Start by gathering all your ingredients. Make sure the pineapple is frozen before proceeding with the recipe.

Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

Scoop out with an ice cream scoop. Or place the whipped mixture in a piping bag fitted with a star tip and squeeze or pipe for a nice swirly finish.

For a swirly soft serve that keeps its shape longer, freeze at least twenty minutes before serving. The recipe makes about two to three servings.

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the freezer for up to three months. Thaw before serving.
