This old-school Deviled Ham recipe is a hearty concoction of finely chopped ham that can be eaten as a spread, dip, or topping. It’s perfect for leftover ham!

As a child I loved devil’s ham. You know what I’m talking about? The canned meats with the white paper wrapping… a bit like potted meat. It’s a bit like ham salad but with a slightly different texture. I remember so many deviled ham lunches as a kid. I’m not sure why I do this, but I just love the stuff.
Well, as an adult, I still crave that taste. So I decided to put together a devil’s ham myself. It’s quick, easy, and can be used on a sandwich, as I like it, or served as a dip or spread on crackers. And it’s pretty close to the original. Also, I know exactly what’s in it, if you know what I mean. π
I usually just buy the chopped ham in a pack from the meat box at the grocery store, but this is a great way to use up the leftover ham, too! This dish may not look chubby, but it sure is delicious! This makes quite a lot, but the recipe can easily be halved if you need less.

What is Devil’s Ham?
You probably remember Deviled Ham from your childhood. It is a canned meat product that came in cans wrapped in white paper. Teufelsschinken is a spread, dip or topping made from finely chopped cooked ham. The ham is then mixed with several ingredients, including mayonnaise, mustard, spices and seasonings.
Devil’s ham is usually served cold on salt crackers or in a sandwich as a spread. Devil’s Ham Sandwiches are absolutely delicious! Think tuna salad sandwich or egg salad sandwich! Yummy!
You can also use deviled ham as a dip with fries or vegetables like celery. Devil’s ham makes a great savory snack or appetizer and is a great way to use up leftover ham.
How to eat Devil’s Ham
There are so many ways to enjoy Deviled Ham:
- As a spread β Just take a spoonful of the mixture and put it on a salt cracker. The salty crackle of the crackers paired with the spiciness of the devil’s ham is so good!
- In a sandwich β I love a deviled ham sandwich. Spread the mixture between two slices of good ol’ white sandwich bread… yes, ma’am! My mouth is watering now!
- as a dip β I love taking a handful of celery stalks and dunking them in a bowl of deviled ham. It’s also great as a dip for Fritos Scoops! That would make an excellent tailgate snack!

Ingredients needed:
- Ham – You can use your leftover ham or buy diced ham at the supermarket. Either way, you’ll need about 4 cups of finely diced ham.
- mayo β Duke’s mayonnaise really goes well with this recipe, but basically any brand will do.
- Dijon mustard β You have to use Dijon mustard to get that spicy taste that I like so much.
- Hot sauce β Choose your favorite, but also consider your own spice tolerance and that of your guests. I think 1/4 teaspoon is the perfect amount. And I’ve never had any complaints from the company or family.
- Worcester sauce β Aside from actually pronouncing Worcestershire, that’s a no-brainer. I just love Worcestershire sauce and it goes so well with this recipe.
- white wine vinegar β The dish needs some acidity to remove fat and salt, and we get that with plain old white vinegar.
How should devil’s ham be stored?
Homemade deviled ham should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator or covered tightly with plastic wrap. Devil’s ham can usually be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
You will need to adjust this time if using leftover ham. Ham generally has a shelf life of 3-5 days after cooking. The same expiration date applies to your ham from the date the ham was actually cooked.
Frozen ham doesn’t taste good when it’s frozen and then thawed. When thawed, the consistency gets a bit mushy, so I don’t recommend freezing the devil’s ham after preparation.
