Making the best homemade honey mustard

This recipe is for a creamy honey mustard sauce that’s perfect for dipping. We love it with chicken nuggets and popcorn chicken, and it’s delicious with these easy pork chops. Here’s what you need to prepare it:

Mayonnaise + Sour Cream: I love combining mayo and sour cream. The mayonnaise is creamy and rich, while the sour cream spices things up a bit. We do this when we make our favorite potato salad dressing. If you don’t have both, you can still make the sauce and use what you have.

Honey: Without honey there is no honey mustard sauce. Depending on the brand you bought, it might taste sweeter or more floral than others. You may need to adjust the amount of honey in the sauce to get the right flavor.

Mustard: For the best honey mustard sauce, use both yellow mustard (American style) and Dijon mustard. Yellow mustard contains quite a lot of vinegar, which has a wonderful effect on the taste of the sauce. Dijon mustard has a pungent flavor and the strong mustard flavor we need.

Vinegar or Lemon Juice: Creamy sauces get better with a little more acid. In this case, we love distilled vinegar or lemon juice.

For the sauce, place everything in a bowl and stir until combined. Simply!

Creamy honey mustard sauce

Our homemade honey mustard sauce is quick and easy, drawing on simple pantry staples. You can prepare this delicious sauce in five minutes at most. We love the combination of mayonnaise and sour cream. The mayonnaise is rich and the sour cream softens the flavor of the honey mustard. If you don’t have both, use what you have. This sauce is still very tasty when prepared only with mayonnaise, and even only with sour cream.

Adam and Joanne’s tips

  • Mustard: For the best honey mustard sauce, use both yellow mustard (American style) and Dijon mustard. Yellow mustard contains quite a lot of vinegar, which has a wonderful effect on the taste of the sauce. Dijon mustard has a pungent flavor and the strong mustard flavor we need. If you only have one type, that’s fine; use it. The sauce will still taste good.
