What is CoolWhip?

Cool whip is used in the United States as a topping for cakes and other desserts.

It’s an imitation of whipped cream that doesn’t need to be whipped. Manufactured by Kraft Heinz, has been around in the USA since the 1960’s.

It is sold frozen and once thawed in the fridge it will keep its shape and not melt.

It’s very popular and used in many US recipes – making us Aussies scratching our heads as to what it is and what to use instead.

If you haven’t come across it in any recipes, you might remember Cool Whip from this episode of Family Guy.

Say “whip”. Whip.

Say “cool whip”. cowwhip.

So funny!

With recipes from the USA that call for “Cool Whip”.

Unlike Ben & Jerry’s, Hershey’s, McDonald’s, Starbucks and Krispy Kreme, Cool Whip hasn’t found its way Down Under.

So what to do if we want to use a recipe that uses it as an ingredient?

You could just whip up some thickened cream (that’s heavy cream if you’re in the US) with some powdered sugar and vanilla extract, but that doesn’t hold its shape as well as Cool Whip.

You can also try adding some gelatin to the above ingredients. Dissolve a teaspoon of gelatin in a tablespoon of warm water and add to a cup of (very cold) cream before whipping.

Another idea, and the one I find the easiest, is to add some cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract to the cream for a cream that’s more like the original Cool Whip.

  1. Place your cream cheese in one bowl and the thickened cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in another.
  2. In a bowl, beat the cream cheese until soft and creamy. In another bowl, beat cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract until peaks form.
  3. Gradually beat the cream cheese into the cream mixture until smooth.

It might take a little extra effort, but that’s probably the closest thing to the Cool Whip in Australia.
