Dark and White Chocolate Chip Strawberries

Chocolate covered strawberry ingredients

To prepare the recipe, you will need fresh strawberries, chocolate chips or finely chopped candy bars or candy melts, and optional vegetable oil, coconut oil, or shortening.

You can use dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, white chocolate, or a combination of these.

Stirring the optional oil into the melted chocolate creates a smoother sauce that coats the berries more easily. It’s perfectly fine to leave out for an oil-free option.

Note: The same recipe can be used to make other chocolate covered fruits like cherries, raspberries or chocolate covered orange slices.

A standard 16-ounce container of strawberries from brands like Driscoll’s is one pound, or about twenty to twenty-four berries. I have not tried this recipe with frozen strawberries.

Leftover strawberries? Eat them with homemade Nutella

Strawberries dipped in chocolate

How to make chocolate covered strawberries

Start by washing your strawberries, then laying them out on a paper towel or cloth towel to dry. Because water sets chocolate, it’s very important to dry the berries completely before dipping them into the chocolate sauce.

Line a baking sheet or large plate with parchment paper or wax paper and set aside. Or take a piece of styrofoam (see below).

Melt your chocolate, either in the microwave or using the double grill method below. For a smoother sauce, I like to stir in the optional oil after melting the chocolate.

Dip each strawberry into the melted chocolate, either holding it by the stick or using a skewer, spoon or fork.

Smear with toppings as desired, then place the berries on the prepared tray. Once all of the strawberries are coated in chocolate, let sit at room temperature to set the hard chocolate coating. Do not refrigerate as condensation may form on the berries.

If desired, melt some white chocolate chips, peanut butter, coconut butter, or almond butter. Drizzle over the hardened chocolate strawberries with a spoon. Or pour the melted chocolate into a plastic bag, cut a small piece off the side of the bag to make a small hole, and squeeze the chocolate out into a swirl or your favorite design.

The chocolate berries can be made a few hours or up to a day in advance. If they’re going to be served the day they’re made, it’s best to leave them uncovered and not refrigerate. However, if the chocolate-covered strawberries are out for more than eight hours, they should be stored in the fridge or freezer to keep them fresh.

Leftover chocolate-covered strawberries stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to two days, or frozen in an airtight container for up to a month.

Tuxedo Strawberries

The trick to pretty strawberries

If you use parchment paper, chocolate covered strawberries may stick to the plate a little. They’re still easy to remove, but the chocolate on one side might not look as pretty.

So I recommend using wax paper over parchment if you can. Or for perfect chocolate-covered strawberries, thread each berry onto a skewer or toothpick and dip in chocolate. Insert the other end of the skewer into a piece of Styrofoam to let the berries dry. Once the chocolate has set, you can take out the strawberries and place them on a plate.

How do you melt chocolate

The two best ways to melt chocolate are either in the microwave or with a dual grill, as chocolate can burn quickly when heated directly on the stovetop.

Double broiler method

If not already cut into small pieces, finely break the chocolate with a knife.

Place the chocolate chips in the top pan of a double broiler or in a heatproof mixing bowl over a saucepan or lower double broiler filled with about 1 inch of boiling (non-boiling) water.

To emphasize: The water goes into the floor pan. Do not let water touch the chocolate chips in the top pan.

Stir the chocolate until smooth, let the steam heat it indirectly and slowly melt it.

Melt chocolate in the microwave

If using candy bars instead of chips, use a knife to finely chop them.

Place the chocolate in a completely dry and microwavable bowl. Heat for 20 seconds.

Stir, then heat in 10-second increments, stirring after each stir to ensure the chocolate doesn’t burn. It’s important to melt chocolate slowly as it can burn quickly.

If you add oil, stir it in after the chocolate has melted. Do not add water anywhere.

Soccer strawberries decorated with chocolate

Decorate with chocolate strawberries

The funnest part of this kid-friendly and easy chocolate dessert is decorating the berries however you like.

Use different types of chocolate for a nice marbled or drizzled effect. Or go to a local craft store and look for edible gold or silver glitter to sprinkle on top.

You can even decorate them to look like cute ladybugs or make homemade chocolate soccer balls to serve as dessert for a Super Bowl party.

For tuxedo strawberries, first dip the fresh strawberries in melted white chocolate. Allow the chocolate shell to set in the refrigerator. Then dip the sides in semi-sweet or dark chocolate for a tuxedo pattern. Use a toothpick to add chocolate chips.

Other chocolate covered strawberry topping ideas include shaved chocolate, mini chocolate chips, chia seeds, grated coconut, vanilla icing, purple or rainbow sprinkles, granola or granola, or crushed walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachios, or pecans.

Package and shipping ideas

If you’re serving the chocolate-covered fruit at a party or event, try arranging it on a fancy tray, perhaps alongside a bottle of champagne.

Or use them to decorate cupcakes or cakes, like this vegan chocolate cake.

You can also make romantic chocolate and strawberry bouquets. Thread each berry onto a long skewer, arrange the skewers in a flower vase and add a few pink or red roses if desired.

To send chocolate-covered strawberries in the mail, carefully pack them in a bag, cake box, or candy box. I love these Chocolate Covered Strawberry Treat Boxeswhich come with twenty-four boxes and four compartments per box.

Choose same-day, express or overnight shipping and delivery for freshness and refrigerate berries before packaging. Be sure to insulate the box and wrap the berries securely to prevent them from moving and individual strawberries from touching or melting together during shipping.

How to make chocolate covered strawberries
  • 16 oz fresh strawberries
  • 9 oz dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips or finely chopped chocolate
  • optionally 1 tsp vegetable or coconut oil
  • optional melted white or dark chocolate to drizzle
  • optional toppings (ideas are listed above)
  • Wash berries and dry with kitchen paper. Be sure to let the berries dry completely. Gently melt chocolate in a double broiler or in the microwave (see above for melting chocolate). Using a spoon, fork, toothpick or skewer, dip each strawberry into the chocolate sauce. Spread with toppings of your choice if you like. Either place the berries on a parchment or waxed paper-lined tray, or allow them to dry upside down by inserting the other end of the skewer into a piece of Styrofoam. Let the berries sit at room temperature until the chocolate hardens. Decorate with melted white or dark chocolate as desired. Chocolate covered strawberries are best served the day they are made and should be kept uncovered and unrefrigerated in a cool, dry place for up to eight hours. After this time, refrigerate leftover strawberries for up to two days. Or freeze in an airtight container for up to a month.View nutritional information
