Is it fair to surprise someone with a plant-based alternative to their regular meat products? I think when the subject involved is the carrot, you are good to go. Because once you tell someone it’s a carrot, they see it differently. But if you didn’t know it was a carrot to begin with, you’d be surprised how well it passes the test.

the main ingredient

A bowl of fresh carrot marinade sits next to it.

Here are the ingredients you will need for this recipe:

  • Soy sauce — I use a gluten-free version of soy sauce called tamari. You can use plain soy sauce, coconut aminos, etc.
  • Vinegar – We will use apple cider vinegar for this recipe.
  • Broth — To make the best vegetable broth, I like to combine 1 teaspoon of vegetable bouillon with water. I especially like the bouillon better than the vegetable base.
  • Maple Syrup – You can substitute agave nectar.
  • liquid smoke
  • Brown mustard
  • Garlic – We will use 1 or 2 cloves of fresh garlic.
  • Carrots — I like to choose large carrots that have a decently wide base at both ends. In other words, carrots that have excessively narrow ends may not work. We can get away with thick, original edges, but the shape needs to be balanced.
  • Hot Dog Buns – You can find these at the store or make dairy-free hot dog buns at home.
  • Toppings — Add your favorite hot dog toppings (see ideas below)!

Why this recipe is a winner

  • healthy — Carrots are low in calories and full of healthy phytonutrients, like beta-carotene (which gives them their distinctive orange color).
  • Simple elements — Carrots, vinegar, soy sauce (or gluten-free soy sauce), maple syrup? All of these ingredients may already be on hand or you can find them at a local grocery store.
  • simple — Preparing the carrots is the hardest part of this recipe, but once you’re done, it’s a breeze!
