Burger King opens meat-free popups in three Nordic cities – vegetarian

Burger King has opened three meat-free popup restaurants in Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen.

Customers in the Norwegian, Swedish and Danish capitals can now choose from a variety of offerings made using plant-based meats from The Vegetarian Butcher — including meat-free versions of classic options like Whopper and Chicken Royale. Some sauces containing eggs and dairy are still available, but customers can ask for these to be omitted to make their orders completely vegetarian.

“By opening a restaurant that serves only plant-based and meat-free options, we will have a good opportunity to test products that are not yet part of our traditional menu and to develop and innovate more of our products in the plant-based category,” says Kirsten. Popups will be open for one month.

50% plant-based menu

Less than four years after launching the first plant-based Whopper, Burger King has trialled numerous meat-free popups worldwide, including in Spain, Portugal and Costa Rica. In 2021, the fast-food chain announced plans to phase out some meat items and introduce more plant-based products, with a goal of making its menus 50% plant-based by 2030.

Burger King is now offering a meatless version of almost every menu option across 750 German locations, after a trial proved “tremendously well received”. In Belgium, the chain reported last year that one in three Whoppers sold was plant-based, while an Austrian Burger King location tested plant-based options to default to consumers who hadn’t specified their preferences.

“If restaurants want to be part of the sustainable food system that consumers are demanding, they’d do well to follow Burger King’s impressive lead and put plant-based meats at the heart of their menus,” said Carlotta Lucas, Good’s corporate engagement manager. Food Institute Europe.
