The BEST salmon burgers

These are the best salmon burgers for a variety of reasons, but mostly because I love how easy they are and because they only contain fresh ingredients! So often salmon burgers are stuffed with breadcrumbs so the mixture binds better (and because breadcrumbs are cheaper!), but not these. These use only fresh salmon and herbs and spices.

We’re offering two different flavors because we’ve tested both and couldn’t decide which to share. We’ll leave it up to you to decide which flavor you prefer, but personally you really can’t go wrong!

Ingredients in the salmon burger Recipe

  • Salmon – I like to use fresh salmon, but you can also use canned salmon. See my note below!
  • Dijon mustard – the perfect pairing of flavors for the salmon burger base.
  • spices and condiments – Depending on the flavor of the salmon burger you want to prepare, add additional spices and spices. Dill and fresh lemon juice or cilantro and lime plus green onions. You can also add fresh parsley or other fresh herbs.
  • Spicy cumin yoghurt sauce – this homemade sauce goes perfectly with the burgers!

Spicy yogurt sauce

We decided to pair this salmon burger recipe with a yogurt sauce because I’m always in the pro sauce camp. It takes two seconds to mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and goes super well with the salmon! It’s tangy, lemony, savory and creamy…so good. Here’s what you need:

  • whole milk yoghurt (or natural yoghurt)
  • olive oil
  • Fresh lemon juice + zest
  • cumin
  • Salt

Obviously it’s great with those salmon burgers, but also with french fries, roasted veggies, roasted fish or you can add more oil to the mix to thin it out and use as a salad dressing. Definitely worth doing!

How to make salmon burgers

We give you two variations of this salmon burger recipe: Lemon Dill Salmon Burger or Cilantro Lime Salmon Burger. You can’t go wrong with either one, so pick one this week and do the other next week!

STEP 1: MAKE SALMON PASTE

The first step is to make a paste by blending 1/4 of the fresh salmon with 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard in a food processor. The end result will be a rubbery texture that acts as the glue holding the burgers together.

STEP 2: ADD TO FOOD PROCESSOR

Place the remaining salmon in the food processor along with the rest of the ingredients (depending on what flavor you’re making!). Pulse about 10-15 times or until the herbs are evenly distributed and you have a chunky mixture.

STEP 3: SHAPING PATTIES

Shape into four patties and let set in the fridge for 20-30 minutes.

STEP 4: COOKING SALMON BURGERS

When ready to cook, heat a large skillet or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and bake until golden, about 3 minutes per side. Serve with rolls or as salad wraps and add any toppings you like! Pro tip: The Cilantro Lime Salmon Burger is delicious with pickled onions and a tangy cumin yogurt sauce.

Can you use canned salmon?

Since I knew you would be asking that question, we ran the tests for you and YES, you can use canned salmon in this salmon burger recipe. You can use the same amount of cans for fresh (1 1/4 lbs) but will need to adjust the recipe slightly – start with less Dijon and lemon juice and check the consistency. Add more as needed.

What do you eat with salmon burgers?:

I know some might think Salmon Patties may be strange but trust me! They aren’t at all. Jess and I paired this salmon burger recipe with a flavorful yogurt sauce, veggies, and a bun and they were delicious! They also go great with a coleslaw or just plain with roasted vegetables. Can you grill these salmon burgers?

Yes! You can grill these salmon burgers on your grill. Just make sure you grease the grates really well so they spin easily.

How to store salmon burgers

In the refrigerator – refrigerate for up to 3 days (but fresh is best). Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop and garnish with yoghurt dressing.

In the freezer – Place salmon burgers in one layer on a baking sheet and freeze for 1 hour. Remove from freezer and place in a ziplock bag, dividing layers with parchment paper. Place back in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
