Fresh or frozen wings?

The important things first. Fresh or frozen wings? There are many options when it comes to chicken wings, and we have good news and bad news for you:

Good news: You can buy either frozen or fresh chicken wings at the grocery store and either will work. Actually, We recommend buying them frozen Because a combination of drummies and wings is more likely to be found frozen than fresh!

The other nice thing about buying them frozen is that you’re more likely to find the drummies and wings already separate than having to make them yourself, which is a mess. We know that from experience.

Bad news: If you’re buying frozen wings, we recommend thawing them before cooking them in the slow cooker. Don’t worry, all you have to do is let them thaw in the fridge overnight and you’re good to go!

The reason we recommend thawing them first is to make sure there are no foodborne illnesses.

Ingredients

  • 3 Lb. uncooked chicken wings fresh or frozen
  • 1 Cup barbecue sauce shared (or more if desired)
  • salt and pepper taste good

  • Begin by preparing the chicken wings. If the chicken wings are frozen, allow them to thaw in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight. Then season the uncooked wings with salt and pepper.

  • Spray the bottom and sides of your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray and place chicken wings on the bottom.

  • Pour in 1/2 cup BBQ sauce and mix until chicken is completely coated

  • Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for about 2 hours or on low for about 4 hours. You’ll know your wings are done when they reach an internal temperature of 165°F.

  • Once full, there is an option to eat it right away. Or we recommend caramelizing the sauce and adding some crunch.

  • To do this, remove the chicken wings from the slow cooker and place them on a greased baking sheet. Coat both sides of the chicken wings with another 1/2 cup of BBQ sauce.
