Ingredients for Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

The no-bake and easy apple and oatmeal recipe calls for oatmeal, apples, cinnamon, salt, your choice of milk, your choice of sweetener, and optionally, raisins.

Topping ideas include diced walnuts or pecans, almond butter or peanut butter, shredded coconut, sliced strawberries or bananas, or a handful of chia seeds or flaxseeds for added fiber and fun texture.

Pretty much any milk will work here, so go with your favorite. Try almond milk for low-calorie oatmeal or coconut milk for vegan oatmeal that tastes like dessert. For the best apple oatmeal flavor and creamy texture, do not substitute water for the milk.

Sweeten with your choice of granular or liquid all-purpose sweetener. Options that work include plain maple syrup, honey, agave, coconut sugar, date sugar, brown sugar, or erythritol for a sugar-free version. The amount of sweetener depends on whether you’re using unsweetened milk and your personal taste buds.

The recipe can be dairy-free, gluten-free, no added sugar, and vegan. For apple pie protein oats, add a scoop of your favorite protein powder before cooking.

Gala apples

Which apple variety?

Pretty much any kind of apple will work here.

At the store, look for either red or green apples that are crispy on the outside, not soft or mushy to the touch. Some of my favorites are Braeburn, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala apples or Pink Lady apples.

You can peel the apple skin before dicing or leave the peel on for extra fiber. It’s entirely your choice.

If you’re still craving healthy apple recipes, make vegan apple pie or applesauce pie or this soft and glazed apple bread.

Rolled oats or steel oatmeal

Adapted from my Banana Oatmeal, this recipe calls for old-fashioned or Irish oatmeal. Quick Oats or Instant Oats can be substituted in equal amounts.

If you prefer to make apple oatmeal with steel-cut oats, follow this crock pot oatmeal recipe by adding 2 cups diced apples and a teaspoon and a half of cinnamon.

How to make apple pie oatmeal

In a medium saucepan, combine oats, diced apples, cinnamon, salt, milk of your choice, and optional sweetener.

Bring to a boil, then continue to cook the apple cinnamon oatmeal on the stovetop over low-medium heat. If it thickens, stir it frequently to prevent sticking.

Once it has reached a porridge consistency, portion into bowls and serve hot with toppings of your choice.

After the oats have cooled, refrigerate any leftover oats in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

If you want to turn the recipe into apple overnight oats, prepare the oatmeal the night before. Let cool, then transfer to a covered mason jar or bowl. Refrigerate overnight, then eat cold or reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop with a little extra milk.

I didn’t try to make the recipe in an Instant Pot or microwave, or turn it into apple cinnamon oatmeal. If you experiment with different cooking methods, be sure to leave a comment so other readers can see your results.

Sauteed Apple Cinnamon Oats

For an easy morning meal, I like to just combine everything in one pot and cook everything at once until thick and creamy.

If you’re feeling ambitious, you can sauté the cinnamon apples separately for added flavor and buttery richness using the following method:

Heat some coconut oil or butter (or vegetable butter) in a small saucepan. Stir in diced apples and cinnamon and sauté for five minutes or until apples soften.
