A fixture in the King-Lincoln Bronzeville District for over three years, Alebrijes Food Truck has begun opening early for breakfast this week! The truck is located on the northeast corner of East Long Street and Taylor, behind East High School, at the corner of the MLK Library and across from OSU East Hospital. Just follow your nose to the inviting smells of the charcoal grill!

Alebrijes takes its name from imaginary figures carved or painted, which decorate the outside of the truck. They currently serve breakfast Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 10:30 (different from the printed menu). Their offerings include a breakfast sandwich with sausage, spam, or tomato, a couple of tacos, coffee, and donuts (which they said they’re still tweaking, so they’re not fully available yet).

Alebrijes also serves its usual menu of tacos, tortas, burritos, quesadillas and its signature grilled chicken.

I made a couple of visits this week to try most of the menu. (Twist my arm.)

First, the tacos: they offer a eggs with chorizowith scrambled eggs and mixed with a beautiful chorizo, ya fried egg taco with an egg, onion and coriander. I added slices of avocado to both.

The breakfast sandwich really stands out to me: a house-made English muffin layered with fried egg, cheese, a spicy sausage and a Calabrian chili mayo.

It is compact, well seasoned and filling.

Even though they’re only testing breakfast (and I can’t wait to try those donuts), I’d say the Alebrijes team is off to a great start.

If you visit later for lunch or dinner, make it a point to try the grilled chicken. When Alebrijes first opened, it took the place of longtime taco truck Los Potosinos, which was known for its pollo al carboni. (Side note: Los Potosinos recently resurfaced on the west side.)
