The FDA strongly warns against eating any food containing raw flour, as it is untreated and processing the grain does not kill harmful bacteria. Since 2009, the FDA has reported 168 known illnesses and 20 hospitalizations for foods such as prepared cookies and cake mixes. Sure, the chances are low, but if you enjoy vegan cookie dough made with raw flour, there’s still a risk.

The cookie dough below (and all commercially available cookie dough intended to be enjoyed raw) is made with heat-treated flour. It kills germs and is approved by the FDA as safe for consumption.

Edible cookie dough vegetarian?

Commercially available edible cookie doughs are free of raw eggs, but not all of them are inherently vegan. Many contain milk fat, butter, whey, and/or milk solids.
