Lebanese Hushwee (or Hashwee) is an easy, humble Middle Eastern recipe made with ground beef, cinnamon, and toasted pine nuts. Every family has a staple they keep going back to. For my family? This is Lebanese hushwee, or ground beef with pine nuts. Full of flavor but quick to make, we use it in a handful of different dishes but enjoy it on its own too!
Ingredients
- clarified butter: Also called ghee, it has a more toasted, nutty flavor than regular butter and also has a longer shelf life and shelf life than typical butter.
- Onion: I use a white onion as it is mild and flavorful to most but still adds great flavor.
- ground beef: I use ground beef, but feel free to use ground beef or even any other ground beef you have on hand!
- Lebanese Spice Blend: My Lebanese spice mix is a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, salt and pepper.
- pine nuts: Mild and sweet in flavor and buttery in texture, their flavor is greatly enhanced when they are roasted or roasted.
How to Make Lebanese Hushwee

Start by melting your clarified butter over medium-high heat, then add your diced onions and sauté until slightly translucent.

Add your ground beef and season with a little salt and pepper by mashing with a wooden spoon or potato masher.

Add your Lebanese spice mix and continue cooking until the ground beef is browned and crumbled.

Finish by adding your toasted pine nuts and chopped parsley (if you have it).

Serve with flatbread and brown rice and enjoy your Lebanese Hushwee!

In a deep pan, melt butter over medium-high heat, then add the chopped onion. Fry for 4-5 minutes until translucent.

Add ground sirloin and spices. Cook for 8-10 minutes or until the meat is browned, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon to break up the meat. Check for spices and season with salt and pepper. Stir in the toasted pine nuts and set aside.
If you don’t want to make your own clarified butter (also known as “ghee”), you can find it online or at most health food stores.
For lasting freshness, store pine nuts in the freezer to keep them fresher longer.
