A survey conducted by the Vegan Hoy Foundation in collaboration with the Albert Schweitzer Foundation in five Latin American countries measured the availability of vegan products in LATAM retail for the first time.
covering 14 cities across Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru; 25 retailers were surveyed, which translates to about 100 stores, to find out their availability of vegetarian products.
According to Vegetarianos Hoy, Mexico ranks as the country with the most vegan products and Chile as the country with the most certified vegan products. Regarding the LATAM ranking of certified vegan products, Chile ranked first, Mexico second and Colombia third.
The ranking was based on three pillars:
- presence of vegan products in the surveyed supermarkets.
- Number of vegan-certified products of plant origin, That is, products that have an official seal to verify that they do not contain animal ingredients. One of the official seals is the Vegan Seal, with which the Fundación Vegetarianos Hoy certifies.
- Sections that define different products of vegetable origin: meat, sausage and fish substitutes of vegetable origin; Alternatives to dairy products of plant origin; sweets, baked goods, plant-based sandwiches (snacks); and plant-based prepared foods and convenience foods; and plant-based sauces, dips and spreads.

Argentina
in Argentina; Carrefour, Jumbo, Via, Day and Carrefour Express stores were surveyed in Buenos Aires, Neuquén and the Federal Capital City.

In summary, at the LATAM level, Mexico and Chile were the most prominent: Mexico ranked first in the general LATAM ranking of availability of vegan products, while Chile ranked second, third and fourth. Mexico is in eighth place, followed by Colombia in ninth place and Argentina in tenth place.

“The implementation of the first vegan ranking of supermarkets in Latin America gave us the opportunity to X-ray the offer of products of vegetable origin in the retail market, while at the same time there is an opportunity to grow in different categories,” commented Ignacia Uribe, General Director of Vegetarians Who’s.
