A simple Valentine’s Day cookie
This Cut and bake Valentine’s Day cookies are a fun twist on traditional sugar cookies! I’m sure you’ve seen the pre-made cutting and baking dough with holiday pictures in the store. While store-bought dough is great when you’re short on time, nothing beats a homemade sugar cookie. I promise these are simpler than they look, but you can take all the compliments when your friends rave about how chic these are. 😉

Funny holiday variations
The beauty of this recipe is that you can make it for almost any holiday! Here are some fun slice-and-bake cookie variations:
- St. Patrick’s Day – Color some dough green and find a shamrock cookie cutter for a cute Irish cookie!
- Easter – Add less food coloring for a pastel look and find a bunny or egg shaped cookie cutter.
- Christmas – Skip the middle part and instead roll the edges of the dough into red, green, and white sprinkles for an easy Christmas cookie.
- Fourth of July – Take some notes from the Christmas sections and use red, white and blue sprinkles!
- halloween Color the outer batter purple, black, or orange and leave the inner batter plain for a spooky contrast!

For full recipe details, including required ingredients and measurements, see the printable recipe card below. Here’s what to expect, step by step, as you make these fun Valentine Slice and Bake Cookies:

Make sugar cookie dough
Stir in a small bowl Flour And baking powder together. Put aside. cream butter And Sugar together. stir in egg And Vanilla. Slowly integrate the dry Ingredients.

Add red food coloring to a smaller portion of dough
Once the dough has come together, transfer 2/3 of the dough to a separate bowl. stir in red food coloring to the smaller portion of dough until it is a uniform color.

Roll out the red dough
Next, roll out the red dough fairly thick, about 1 inch thick, and Start cutting out hearts with a heart-shaped cutter. Once you’ve cut them all, line them all up and do your best to glue them together without ruining their shape. I ended up with 3 stacks of hearts.
Freeze Red Heart Stacks *Optional (but highly recommended)*
*Hot tip! I’ve found that freezing the stacks for about 30 minutes makes the job easier and doesn’t lose their shape. Cover the stacks lightly with plastic wrap on a baking sheet and place in the freezer. The regular dough is actually better softer (at room temperature) so that it can stick well to the hearts, otherwise there will be some holes between the two colors.

Roll out the remaining dough
Divide your remaining uncolored cookie dough into 3 (since I have 3 stacks of red hearts) and cover each tower of stacked hearts, making sure to keep them together.
Hot tip! I found that rolling out snakes of dough and gluing them to the sides was the easiest and quickest way to cover them.

Wrap + refrigerate for 1 hour
Once the heart stacks are completely covered, gently roll them up to get a smooth, rounded edge. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate 1 hour to overnight.

Preheat oven + cut cookie dough cylinders
When you are ready to bake, preheat the oven. line baking tray with parchment paper or a Silicone jaws mat. Put aside.
Remove the dough cylinders out of the fridge and cut into slices 1/2 inch rounds. lay on them prepared baking sheet Leave 1 inch around each cookie.

Bake
Bake 8-10 minutes or until the bottom of the cookie is barely (and I mean barely) brown, if brown at all and not shiny. Remove from the oven and let cool for 2 minutes before cooling completely on a wire rack.
Hot tip! Want to know the trick to having perfectly round cookies? Before removing from the baking sheet Take a large round cookie cutter and, once they come out of the oven and are still hot, swirl the cookies around. This is known as “cookie scooting”. This will fix some of the edges and give them a more rounded shape.

Make Ahead + save instructions
Store Valentine cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Freeze + Bake later– Prepare the dough according to the recipe until you put the dough in the fridge. At this point you can place wrapped cylinders of dough in a freezer safe bag and in the freezer until ready to bake. When ready to bake, let the dough thaw in the refrigerator overnight before baking.
