Introducing Nutella Banana Bread AKA the softest banana bread you’ve ever twirled thick ribbons of Nutella. Perfect for the holidays or a weekend!
Before we even get into that, I just have to tell you, guuuuuuys. It’s sooo good. This Nutella Swirled Banana Bread is hands down the best thing you’ll ever eat. It’s not even worth trying new recipes; There’s no homemade banana bread I’ve ever eaten that comes close to this one. It’s soft, velvety and light. It is so flavorful and can be eaten at any time of the day. It’s sliceable so you can have a sliver or a giant chunk. Or five shards.
What ingredients do you need to make this decadent Nutella Banana Bread?
This Nutella Swirled Banana Bread is made with 8 simple ingredients, but don’t let its simplicity fool you – these ingredients melt together to create the most incredible banana bread you’ll ever set your teeth on. Also, banana bread is basically 50% bananas (I don’t actually know), so it’s basically like eating a piece of fruit.
- Overripe Bananas: Of course, all banana bread needs, well, bananas. The more spoiled the better in the case of banana bread as brown ripe bananas are spicier and sweeter! These mashed bananas will become the basis of your bread!
- Sugar: We use granulated sugar in this banana bread, but you can really use whatever you have on hand. Feel free to adjust this amount to your taste and the degree of ripeness of your bananas! If your bananas are a little underripe, you can increase the sugar by a couple of tablespoons, and if your bananas are superripe, feel free to decrease the amount! If you run out of granulated sugar, you can use brown sugar too!
- Butter: You’d never believe it because this bread is so moist and buttery, but you only need 6 tablespoons of butter for the whole loaf! It’s practically magical. The secret ingredient is Greek yogurt to keep the bread moist… which I’ll get to in a moment!
- Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt has the creaminess of “regular” yogurt, but with far less sugar, far more protein, and a bold flavor that adds that extra something to baked goods! It’s one of my favorite ingredients for all of your baked goods! The reason I put Greek yogurt in loaves like banana bread is because of its acidity. The yoghurt acids react strongly with baking soda to generate carbon dioxide, which helps the bread rise better and gives it that characteristic fluff.
- eggs: 2 eggs give your banana bread the perfect texture without getting too sticky!
- baking soda: Baking soda gives your banana bread the perfect rise!
- Flour: All-purpose flour gives this banana bread a tender crumb! If you want to spice up the diet, you can swap it out for whole wheat bread
- Salt: All sweet treats need a little salt to balance the sweetness!
- Nutella: The dreamy waves of Nutella take this banana bread from good to heavenly! You swirl Nutella through the center of the loaf and onto the dough for maximum Nutella coverage. I like to reheat some Nutella in the microwave so it’s easier to toss!
Can you make a different chocolate hazelnut spread than Nutella?
You can, but personally I think Nutella has the best flavor of any different brand out there. Plus, you can find Nutella at most grocery stores, even convenience stores. I’ve tried this recipe before with Trader Joe’s and Whole Food’s and both got the job, but they have a little more chocolate flavor and less hazelnut flavor!
Tips for baking banana bread
Banana bread is one of the most forgiving, no-fuss homemade baked goods, but we’re sort of a banana bread expert, so we’ve got all the tips you need to make sure you have perfect banana bread every time!
- Use overripe bananas—Super ripe, even brown bananas are the key to a sweet, moist, and flavorful banana bread. If your bananas aren’t quite ripe but you’re dying to make a loaf, pierce them a few times with a fork and bake in the oven for 10 minutes until golden. Let the bananas cool completely before adding them to the batter!
- Use Greek yogurt– Watch the mini science lesson above to learn why Greek yogurt is a must for any good banana bread recipe.
- Use room temperature ingredients—In order for Nutella banana bread to bake evenly in the oven, all ingredients should be at room temperature before adding them to the batter (yes, even the eggs and butter).
- No more tossing in Nutella– I know you’ll be tempted to add more Nutella to the banana bread batter, but trust me, there’s no need! If this bread doesn’t have enough Nutella for your liking, I’d recommend spreading Nutella on a warm slice of this bread while you eat it instead.
How to Freeze Banana Bread
This Nutella Banana Bread is a great recipe to make ahead of time and have on hand for last minute gatherings. To freeze this banana bread, first let it cool completely on your countertop. Then wrap it in plastic wrap and then foil a few times before freezing. When you’re ready to eat this banana bread, set it out on your counter and let it thaw to room temperature.
Happy baking!
