There are so many different ways to cook a steak, you can grill a steak or you can cook a steak sous vide, but our favorite way of cooking the steak is in a cast iron. All you need is a couple of steaks, our delicious Steak Seasoning, butter and a cast iron skillet.

Steak: The beauty of cast iron steaks is that you can cook steaks however you like and use any cut of steak you want. Our favorite cut is a ribeye steak. Ribeye tends to have great marbling and flavor.

Homemade Steak Seasoning: Some people prefer just salt and pepper on their steak, but we’re big fans of making the flavor even better with our homemade steak seasoning. Not only does it add great flavor, but it also helps form a delicious crust on the steak.

Butter: Butter, butter, butter. Although you’ll sear the steak in oil at first, eventually you’ll spoon melted butter over the steak as it sears. Trust us, you won’t regret it.

How to make cast iron steak

  1. Rub the steak dry. Season the steak with the homemade steak seasoning. We use a tablespoon, but feel free to add more if you want more. Massage the steak with your hands.
  2. let it rest Let the steak rest for 20-30 minutes to allow it to come to room temperature and salt the meat.
  3. Make the garlic butter. Blend the garlic butter along with the herbs and salt until blended and smooth.
  4. Get the cast iron very hot. When the steak is done, heat olive oil in a large cast iron skillet over high heat until cast iron is very hot. You will hear the olive oil sizzle when the cast iron is done.
  5. Sear the steak. Place the steak in the pan and sear the steak for about 3 minutes. How long you sear the steak depends on how thick the steak is. If you have a thinner steak, you may need to sear the steak for 2 minutes. Flip the steak and immediately add the garlic butter to the cast iron. When butter melts, gently spoon butter over steak for 3 minutes or until internal temperature reaches desired temperature (we prefer 135ºF, medium-rare).
  6. let it rest Immediately remove the steak from the pan and let it rest on a cutting board to allow the juices to settle.

Steak internal temp

Everyone is different when it comes to how they like their steak. We’re big fans of a medium-rare steak, but check the internal temperature of your steak when it’s almost done.

Rarely: 130ºF

Half done: 140ºF

Middle: 155ºF

Well done: 165ºF

Keep in mind that the internal temperature of your steak will continue to rise by about 5°F after cooking.

Cast iron steak tips

Do not sear a cold steak: Make sure you remove the steak from the fridge at least 20-30 minutes before searing to allow it to come to room temperature.

Do not overcook: When in doubt, keep an eye on the internal temperature of your steak. We like to keep a meat thermometer handy while searing a steak to make sure we’re searing it to the perfect temperature

Let rest: Always let your steak rest after you’re done grilling to allow it to cook 5ºF longer. If you let your meat rest, your steak will also be super juicy.
