Air Fryer French Toast Bagels are sweet, savory, and a delicious, high-protein breakfast option. The dough is made from fat-free Greek natural yoghurt and seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg. The bagels are topped with a maple and coconut-palm sugar glaze before air frying, giving the tops a sweet and crunchy texture. Once roasted, I like to spread them with a maple bacon cream cheese (recipe included). This recipe makes 4 bagels.
Making quick and easy bagels has become a low-key obsession.
It started with these all-bagels, then cinnamon raisins, pumpkin spice, and finally jalapeño cheddar. The batter is easy and fully customizable. From sweet to savory, the only limit is your imagination.
My latest and greatest bagel creation is this french toast version. The bagel is spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, formed into bagels, and coated with a maple-coconut icing before being quickly popped into the air fryer. And as if that wasn’t enough, I decided to whip up a plain maple bacon cream cheese to spread on top.
To. To die. For.
Who doesn’t love a sweet and salty combo?
To make these Air Fryer French Toast Bagels you will need:
- unbleached all-purpose flour – The basis of this bagel recipe.
- baking powder – Creates lightness in the dough, which makes the bagels rise.
- Cinammon (Floor) – Imparts a distinct warm and woody taste.
- nutmeg (Floor) – Warm, aromatic with subtle clove notes.
- fine salt – Enhances the flavors in this recipe.
- Easy low-fat Greek yogurt – Is the binder for the bagel dough.
- maple syrup – Used to sweeten and glaze the top of the bagels.
- coconut palm sugar – Used on top of bagels for added sweetness and texture. Use brown sugar if necessary.
- Maple Bacon Cream Cheese – Or use salted butter or regular or whipped cream cheese.
To make the Maple Bacon Cream Cheese you will need:
- whipped cream cheese
- bacon
- maple syrup
Fry 3 to 4 strips of bacon until crispy. I use bacon cut in the middle. Once crispy, drain on kitchen paper and then chop finely.
In a mixing bowl, add 8 ounces of whipped cream cheese, the chopped bacon, and 1 tablespoon of plain maple syrup.
Stir to combine. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
Make the bagels:
In a mixing bowl, measure and add 1 cup all-purpose unbleached flour, 2-1/4 teaspoons baking soda, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon fine salt, and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg.
Whisk to combine.
Add 1 cup plain non-fat Greek yogurt.
Use a spatula to mix until.
Stir and shape into a ball.
Place the dough on a generously floured surface and divide into 4 equal pieces.
Roll each piece in flour. The dough will be quite sticky, so don’t be afraid to use more flour.
Then roll each piece into a 9 to 10 inch rope.
Connect the ends and pinch to secure.
Repeat with the remaining pieces.
In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons maple syrup, 1 tablespoon coconut palm sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
Stir to combine.
Spread this maple mixture over the top and sides of each bagel.
Use the remaining tablespoon of coconut sugar and sprinkle generously over each bagel.
Preheat the air fryer to 300°.
Place the bagels in or on your air fryer insert. I use parchment but only parchment paper designed for air fryers and NEVER preheat your air fryer with parchment paper. Work in batches (if necessary) and air fry for 12 minutes.
Remove and repeat with the remaining bagels if needed.
Halve and toast!
HOW TO TOAST YOUR BAGES IN THE AIR FRYER:
Increase the heat of your hot air fryer to 360°.
Butter the cut side (or if using cream cheese, lightly drizzle with olive oil instead, or just skip this step) and place the two halves in your preheated air fryer. Air fry for 2 to 4 minutes or until desired toasting.
Spread with butter, cream cheese, or maple bacon cream cheese.
You can find the maple bacon cream cheese recipe under the bagel recipe at the end of this post.
