This chocolate peanut butter protein smoothie is made with creamy, natural peanut butter and plenty of rich cocoa. The ultimate busy-morning breakfast recipe for on-the-go!

Ever since my boys were young, I’ve always worked to tweak our morning smoothies so that they head off to school with plenty of protein and other nutrients. This Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie has been a favorite since the boys were little kids, and is full of protein, fiber, and other nutrients!
For omega-3’s, protein, and fiber, I add in a scoop of flax seed meal. You don’t taste it in the final product, but it is a great nutrient boost. I also like to add it to other breakfast recipes, like my Pumpkin Applesauce Muffins and Homemade Instant Oatmeal.
Why You’ll Love This Smoothie
- Full of fiber and protein, it’ll keep you feeling full long after breakfast is over.
- It’s deliciously, naturally sweet, making it a great choice for adults and kids alike.
- It’s easy to customize with whatever ingredients you have on hand.
- You can make it in under 5 minutes!
Ingredients

- Banana: Naturally creamy and sweet, making it so you don’t need any added sugar.
- Peanut butter: High in protein and healthy fats, and delicious nutty flavor.
- Cocoa powder: Adds rich, chocolatey flavor that pairs great with peanut butter.
- Flaxseed meal: Doesn’t taste like anything, but adds important omega 3 fatty acids.
- Protein powder: Ups the protein in the smoothie, making it more filling. I usually use chocolate or vanilla.
- Vanilla: A great flavor enhancer.
- Nutmeg: Adds a bit of warmth and depth of flavor to the smoothie.
Easy Substitutions
- While I love to add flaxseed to my smoothies, you can do other nutrient rich add-ins like chia seeds, oats, or hemp seed.
- If you want to make it creamier, and don’t mind it no longer being dairy-free, you could add some Greek yogurt. Or use any milk of choice, even non-dairy milk.
- Try swapping the peanut butter for any other kind of nut butter.
