A Little Bit About Tofu

Tofu is a plant-based protein first made in China around 200 BC (source). It is made from soaked soybeans which are then blended, cooked and coagulated. Some forms of tofu are also pressed to remove some of the moisture, resulting in different varieties.

A half-cup serving of this soybean curd has up to 21 grams of protein and is low in sodium and cholesterol free (source). It comes in a variety of forms, ranging from from silken to super extra-firm tofu. Tofu doesn’t have much flavor of its own, but it can take on the flavor of whatever spices, sauce, or marinade it is cooked in. Tofu can be blended, shredded, fried, pressed, roasted, grilled, or air fried. The options are truly endless!

Quite possibly best of all is how affordable and accessible this humble plant protein is. It currently can be found for as little as $1.50-$2.50 per block in most major grocery stores, making it more affordable than many processed vegan meat alternatives and animal proteins.
