What is banana jam?
Banana Jam is a delicious banana-flavored spread that tastes like banana bread in a jar. It’s incredibly easy to make, and a great way to avoid food waste. It stays fresh in the fridge for a while and is a great alternative to banana bread if you need to use extra ripe bananas.
Of course, we have nothing against banana bread here, just check out my recipe for the best healthy banana bread or comforting banana bread oatmeal for proof.

How to Make Banana Jam
The great part about this recipe is how easy it is to make. Simply add all the ingredients to a pan and cook them until you have a soft, uniform texture. You can use a potato masher to speed up the process of breaking down the bananas, or if you like more texture in your jam, keep it a bit crunchy. Bananas naturally contain pectin, which helps thicken things.
How long does banana jam last?
You can store your jam in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks. Just keep an eye on the jam, if it starts to smell at all fermented, toss it.
Material notes
Here’s what you need to make the best vegan jam with bananas:
- banana. It is important that you use super-ripe fruit. In fact, the riper the better, as they will be easier to mash and naturally much sweeter. Don’t worry if bananas seem unappetizing, you really want a brown and speckled banana that’s soft to the touch for jam. Another good way to tell if it’s ready is the smell of the banana. The scent should be quite strong, even with the peel.
- sugar. Sugar is essential for this recipe, don’t skip it! This helps preserve the jam, which is why many jams and jellies last so long in the fridge. If you omit the sugar, you can probably keep your banana jam for a few days before it starts to ferment and start to smell alcoholic.
- lemon juice. It is also a key ingredient in this recipe. It adds enough acidity to enhance the flavor of your jam and prevent any nasty organisms from spoiling it.
