What Is Ranch Water

Also known as Texas Ranch Water, this is a highball cocktail that originated in Texas. There are a few different rumors about how it started, when and where. But there isn’t any real proof. But it seems to date back to the 1960’s in West Texas.

What’s In Ranch Water

  • Topo Chico – sparkling water
  • Tequila
  • Lime Juice

Topo Chico is a brand of sparkling water that comes from Mexico. If you are a purist, you believe that a ranch water is not a ranch water with anything but Topo Chico. But honestly, any sparkling water will do.

How To Make Ranch Water

This is one of those recipes that you can play with to get YOUR perfect balance. Below is what I like, but some people like it stronger than others. So don’t be afraid to mix it up and test out your perfect blend.

  • Fill. Fill glasses full of ice, you want your drink to be nice and cold!
  • Mix. Mix together lime juice and tequila and pour over ice.
  • Pour. Top each glass with Topo Chico and garnish with a wedge of lime.

What Tequila To Use

Because this is such a simple drink with not a lot of competing or stand out flavors going on, you really want to use a high quality tequila. I like to use a silver, blanco or white tequila, because it is cleaner and don’t compete with the lime and sparkling water.

You don’t have to spend your entire budget on tequila, something in the $25 range will work great and last you a really long time. Here are a few that I think are worth the price and are good.

  • Corazón Blanco: Inexpensive ($25)
  • Espolòn Tequila Blanco: Inexpensive ($25)
  • Patrón Silver: Mid- Range Expensive ($30+)
  • Casamigos Blanco: Expensive ($50+)

What Can I Use Instead Of Topo Chico

As far as sparkling waters go, I really do think Topo Chico is worth it. I am not a huge fan of La Croix or other drinks like that, but I was very surprised to find I liked Topo Chico. But it can be hard to find, and you may have other sparkling water on hand. So really, any sparkling water will work great!

Don’t tell anyone, because this makes it not “authentic”, but flavored water would be great too, you could add even more lime, or get a mix of berry and lime. Lots of combinations that will make this drink refreshing and tasty for what YOU like.
